New Steering Rack Bushings = No shaky!!!

I installed some new steering rack bushings that I just bought from WabFab Offroad. My rig no longer shakes at 65-70 mph!!

Everything feels a little tighter as well!

Quite an awesome mod for 30 bucks!!

what parts exactly are involved in the steering rack? Do you care to give a synopsis of your installation?

Swapping out the steering bushings is loads of good clean fun.

Glad it worked out well and thanks for the business.

Ehmm, me, too. Any special tools needed for this? I've been putting this off for way too long. Need to get it done before the snow starts falling. Will be doing the sway bar bushings along with this.

There's really not that much to it.

Step 1 : Order the kit from WabFab

Bushings Kit

The kit is at the bottom of the page.

Step 2 : Look at this walkthrough if you want....I didn't need it as it's pretty straight forward. There are also instructions in the kit from Wabfab.

Bushing Install

Step 3 : Do it MAN!!!

Some of those bolts are on there son! So be sure you have a breaker bar if you got your truck on a lift or something so you can use something that large. I used a baby sledge to beat my bolts loose since I have no lift to put the truck on.

Some things to consider are that it's MUCH easier to move the rack around when your tires are off the ground. You'll need to be able to do this to line everything up and also to take the old bushings out.

You kinda have to beat the hell out of the old ones to get them out though, so don't be scared! The new ones go in MUCH easier though!

Also...there are TWO metal sleeves for one of the bushings. I think that this is a cure all solution because you'll only need one. Whichever one your bolt goes through for that part of the rack is the one you'll need to use. I needed the larger diameter sleeve.

The walkthrough that I've provided a link to is incorrect that you'll need to bore out anything. I think this is what the larger sleeve is the fix for. Maybe TRD vs Non-TRD or 2wd vs 4wd bushings?? I don't know? One will work though!

All in all it took me about an hour to do. Most of that time was getting the bolts loose.

Oh....I almost forgot. The large bolt in the rack requires a 22mm socket on both ends. I didn't have one and used an adjustable wrench. Just be sure you have something that can get around that sucker!

I hope this helps guys.

No problem! I appreciate you having the bushings! The stealership won't sell them...you have to buy the whole rack!!!!

Quattro - I ordered them through Wheeler's. They are Energy Suspension. They gave me 2 sets, because I guess Tacoma's/4Runners have two different sized sway bars. They told me to send them back which ever I don't use for credit.

The walk through is not even necessary. If you can do the steering rack bushings, this will be a walk in the park. I did this in my last 4Runner and it took 20 minutes, which was mostly used up by undoing the bolts. Basically, unbolt the two brackets, off with the old bushings, in with the new and bolt up. Easy as pie.

I need to do mine for sure because my center one is tearing. I can see a rubber tear coming out of the sleeve.
Will be ordering one from Wheeler's very soon.
You can examine it by taking off the skid plate and towards the front of the rig from the transfer case.
