new plugs and wires, now 4Runner wont stay on!..

I have a 1998 3.4l 4runner-

I replaced old plugs and wires with NGK plugs and wires tried starting the runner and theres such a bad misfire my runner wont stay on. I made sure I had the wires in the right order and tried again, no luck.

is this the correct firing order-
5 6
3 4
1 2
Front

So then I pulled out one of the spark plugs and theres oil all over the tip, i cleaned it off and cleaned the inside were the plug goes in, i did this to all 6 plugs, tried to start it again and my runner still wont stay on.

I did some research and read that the spark plugs seals could be worn out, leading to oil spilling onto the spark plugs..

My valve cover gaskets have been leaking for awhile now and i already had the gasket kit that comes with the spark plugs seals, i was just waiting for summer to do this but had to do this now.

So I drained the oil replaced my valve cover gaskets and put in the new spark plug seals, put everthing back on and its still having the same problem.. engine tries to start but theres such a bad misfire it wont stay on, pulled out the apark plugs and theres still oil on all the tips..

Anyone have this problem?, what did you do to fix it?
Anyone have any other ideas to what this could be?

Thanks for any help?

This is often caused by piston rings or cylinder walls that are badly worn. Oil may also be pulled into the chamber because of excessive clearance in the valve stem guides, or badly worn valve stem seals. If the PCV valve is plugged or inoperative, it can cause a buildup of crankcase pressure. This condition can force oil and oil vapors past the rings and valve guides into the combustion chamber.

This doesn't make sense to me. The truck was running fine and now it won't stay on and the plugs are wet with oil? Were the old plugs you took out covered with oil? Did you spray or squirt anything down into the hole before you put the new plugs in?

I'm with KBall, there's no way you can drive a car in, change plugs and wires, and have it misfire and not start. the wires have to be wrong. could it be raw fuel on your plugs instead of oil? I do not have a v6 or the manual, so I can't say for sure what the firing order is but most v6 engines fire 1,4,2,5,3,6. please confirm your firing order.
good luck
ps, once you get it right be prepared for a ton of white smoke and backfiring due to the exhaust being full of fuel, hope your cat survives

Consult FSM for firing order, I don't see how this problem could have just started either. Maybe you can put some pics of your old plugs up?

Here is a link to the FSM: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/index.html

I don't know about firing order but the diagram the OP put in his first post is the correct cylinder order. Here's the wiring scheme...

What? Are you saying that DS front plug connects to the PS front coil?

You probably figured it out by now, but the cylinder order is NOT the same as the firing order, and they're BOTH different than the wiring order. The OP's 1st diagram was the cylinder numbering order. AFAIK the firing order is actually 123456. BUT!!!!!, the wiring order is what Elton posted in post #13. The wire from the coil on top of Cylinder 1 (refer to Cylinder order) goes to #4 on the other side (middle hole). #3's wire goes all the way back to hole #6, and #5's wire goes to #2 (front hole).

Cylinder #1

I too just put in new plugs..today..after 50k. The #1 plug had oil on its threads and just a small amount down in the tube. So as I read there is a possibility of having a bad plug seal? Is the the metal one on the plug or something futher down where it screws in.

All the plugs were well within the tolerence/gap called for after being in there for so long.. And the engine has never leaked or burned alot of oil.. Usually loose about .5 quart over 5-7k miles

hey guys thanks for all the replies, looks like it is gas, it just looked like oil because it was so dark and when I searched looked like everywhere had the same answer (spark plug seals), It didnt cross my mind to smell it ha now i feel dumb as hell. I havent had a chance to work on it today but will get it put back together tomorrow for sure.
