New Hood Deflector Review

Hey all,

So I installed the new Reese Outfitters (purchased off E-Bay) hood deflector yesterday. I used the screw method instead of the 3M tape. It uses 6 screws, none of which will fit or line-up with the factory hood deflector holes, so I had to drill 6 new holes. It says to use a 1/8" drill bit, but that was too small. Had to use 9/64" for the holes instead.

I installed it so that it's comes out forward more than usual which I find good for 2 reasons:

1. No need for the little rubber bumpstop things they give you.
2. Cleaning behind the hood deflector and the front of the hood is now possible.

Quality of this product is excellent. It's nice & flexy (but non-squeaky) compared to the factory deflector, which I like. Doesn't make noise & harder to break.

Styling is very nice. The only thing is that it doesn't follow the contour of the 4Runner hood up top. Our hoods are higher in the middle than on the sides & the factory hood deflector follows this design whereas the Reese one does not.

I say this is a great purchase over the old factory one. More durable, more flexible, less noise, held in by 6 screws instead of 4. If you're looking at purchasing a factory hood deflector, I say you try to get your hands on the Reese one first. Barry Blades sells them on EBay and he's pretty good to deal with. He's very active in receiving payment & shipping out your product, but not so responsive via email.

Lent out my digital camera so I don't have any pics yet. I should get it back in the next few days. I'll post some pics then.

Al

I just bought a ventshade Bugflector II a few weeks ago.
Absolutely no rattling and no need for the little rubber bump things either.

I don't know about the Runner but these are good for Tacomas. Pretty easy to find at Pep Boys, too

EGR

You should get an EGR. 4 screws, no drilling, no tape, no little knobs, no rubbing, looks awesome, installs in less than 2 minutes tops.

yes, the egr is nice...fits like a glove but only problem with most deflectors is the hoood movement at high speeds on the highway...anyone know a cheap way of fixing the hood vibration on highways?

Here is a guy who supposedly can fix the hood vibration problem. I have no clue whether it really works or not - just passing on the link.

Well, I installed my Reese Outfitter guard over the weekend. Very happy with the look and the fit. Used the double sided tape and the screws. Had to drill 6x 2mm holes. Then put a good blob of silicone mastic in the hole before screwing in the self tappers. Shouldnt have any rust problems there so. And as you can see from the pics, it has been raining here
