How many choices are there for H.O. Alts?

Ive seen the thread about "Excessive Amperage" http://www.excessiveamperage.com and I can get a 200 amp alternator for my rig for $310.00

But I also have seen many get the Mr. Alternator ones

or there's even what Rob has, NWOR's H.O. Alternator for I dunno how much...

What's everyones opinion?

I plan on getting a winch sometime soon, and have all my lights, so I want a bigger alternator and a yellow top optima... Im not planning on doing dual batteries.

 

Yeah I'd like to purchase one also. That winch sure does bog down everything on pulls.....

 

Mr. Alternator was great to me. The largest he had for my 4th gen was a 160 amp, but he even overnighted a new plug when we realized the new alternator used an oval one instead of the stock square one...great guy to work with from my experience.

So it looks like the following for numbers...

Mr Alternator: 150amp ~$235.00

Excessive Amperage 200amp ~310.00

Northwest offroad 160amp ~468.95


This is not including the ~$20.00 harness if you need one.

I dunno, Im sure I dont need 200amps right??? and given the choice of 10 more amps for $233.95 Id go for the 150amp for less...

If I have all my lights and say I had a winch, would a 150amp and a yellow top be enough?

Do I honestly need a 2nd battery? where would it mount? lol...

 

Can anyone provide what gauge wire to use, and a wiring diagram or something on how one with a battery and a H.O. Alt sitting on a table would hook it all up?

even if you used ms paint... I won't laugh.... much...

 

I would try wrangler power products at www.wranglernw.com They have some very helpful pdf diagrams for wire gauge v. amperage and things of tha nature in their tech archive.

 

if you get the 150amp alt, you can get away with 4ga provided that the run from it to your battery is less than 20feet. Also be sure to upgrade the alternators ground too.

For best results use some 1/0 to upgrade everything. It can be found cheaply at your local welding shop.

 

If you go with Mr. Alternator, get the casing powdercoated. This will help it's efficiency by dissipating more heat. The hotter the alt gets, the less efficient it is. And with that small casing, it gets hot pretty quickly.

Another thing to consider is swapping it in. NWOR will require some fabrication/trimming. I'm pretty sure that excessiveamperage is a direct bolt on. I know for a fact that Mr. Alternator's is a direct bolt on.

You might want to consider swapping in GM unit. They have much bigger housings that can allow for more upgrades without sacrificing performance. Do a search for my user name and alternator. I've been through the trials and tribulations of upgrading. For example:
