A sad sad day here at Yota tech.
I was anticipating the new Runner with alot of enthusiasm, and as far as exterior styling goes, was severely dissapointed

I don't see why they had to go and change it.....it's fine the way it is, kinda glad I didn't wait another year to get a 4runner, I might have changed my mind and never would have felt the joy of owning one

Thanks for the pics, Paul. Great job of beating a lot of others to the punch! There's a few dealers out there now with pictures!

I think one of the reasons I've always liked the 4Runner is that it definitely never looked like anything but itself. It had it's own personality. I guess that's gone now.

Now, when we see a 4Runner on the road, we can wonder if GM came out with a new model of the Avalanche. Yuch!

On the other hand, maybe with all this negativity, the only other way to go is UP! Maybe when we see them in the flesh they'll look more like one good looking vehicle instead of a conglomeration of styling cues. So far from the pics it looks like Toyota just wanted to make the 4Runner look a little like everything else on the road.

Part of me is VERY glad I bought the 2002. On the other hand, I don't want the distinctive look and stance of the 4Runner to fade away, so I'm hoping that the new one is just not very photogenic and will be a knock-out in the flesh.

We can only hope.

I guess we're just a bunch of traditionalists.

Too bad it couldn't have been offered as something else and let the 4Runner continue as what it has always been. No money there, I guess.

Well, from the pictures, I'm not impressed at all. That poor green SR5 looks like it's dying in the other picture.

The problem here is, the new Lexus GX470 will be a rebadged 4Runner. This of course means they took away some of the coolness of the 4Runner looks and will be using them in the GX and adding a higher price tag. If they didn't make the GX, then the new 4Runner would be more on those lines and wouldn't need to be scaled down.

It seems the new 4Runner really isn't what it could have been.

I will tell all of you right now. If you take a current 3rd gen and put it next to this one, you won't be able to say the 3rd gen looks old. The current body style just has the perfect look/balance. Beefy, smooth, rugged, and classy all in one truck.

Thumbs down

 Damn that's a shame... it looks good from the front, alright from the back, and it has kept some of the nice styling ques from the current model, but that's a big thumbs down for me. I can't believe they ripped of the fender "flares" from the Trailblazer there. What were they thinking? Did someone in the R&D department miss the concept of fender FLARES? They're flat! What's the point? It has lost it's ruggedness, and probably it's ability to perform well offroad. The 4Runner as we know it is dead.

I'd put a Can-Back topper on it, and the ARB bumper up front, and mod the heck out of it.
I really like the Tundras. I think that they look really cool and are tough as nails. Just my imput. I like the new Runner, so I am going to keep me mouth closed on this one. :fireman:

Let the Photochopping begin

Can somebody Photoshop one of the pictures so that the truck looks lifted?

I wish I could have or did take more pictures.

Thanks again Corey for all the help.

After seeing it in person and then looking at my 99, my 99 looks old. I need a few more mods. I should have sold the pictures to a magazine.

Good spy pics Paul, LOL.

But have to agree with general consensus. Don't like it.

Paul, watch for any of your pics showing up in Mags as they are yours, ie copyright.

GOOD PICS PAUL!!!

I'm glad I got the last yr of the TRUE 4Runner. The new one is a disgrace to Toyota's engineering and styling. They are a cop out to copying the Trailblazer/Explorer. Its such a COPY!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't they come up with a better body style innovation than these pics???? What a shame!!!! Im repulsed and disappointed with what Toyota has done to the new 4Runner. Who gives a ˟˟˟˟˟ ABOUT THE new standard V6 and optional V8.

GET YOUR ARSE IN ORDER TOYOTA!!! The body SUCKS DOOKIE BALLS. And for all you Austin Power Fan's, "This is NOT SMASHING baby"!!!!!

/Danny

YUCK!!!!!!!

Once again I have to agree with most of the comments.
Toyota should have kept true to the herritage of the 4Runner.

They already have a rig that looks like this new 2003 4Runner, the Highlander.

What they should have done for the new one is brought back the stick shift, E locker, and better flares than those flat things they are trying to pass of as fender flares.

They could have pulled this off very nicely with a well built double duty rig, but nope, they had to basicaly copy a vehicle they already had out for awhile.

Almost amkes you just want to go to the source and have one of these shipped to you.

I wonder how hard it would be to covert it to left hand drive?
That is a sweet rig.
At least the guy's in Australia and the UK could have fun with a rig like that since it's right hand drive.

The bad thing is, there is no resemblance to the current 3rd gen 4Runner. If that truck had no emblems on it, you would have no clue what is was. The 4Runner used to have some "presence" and now it's presence will be held by the last gen models, the last true 4Runners in my opinion.

This is a 4 Runner?

What is this?

I have been trying to save my money up, to get a good down payment for a 4 runner now for the past year.

I was hoping to get a 2002, but looks like I may not have enough yet, so I thought I would just get a 2003. But I don't want this thing!! It looks just like every other SUV on the market, plus it looks so much like every other SUV that Toyota already makes..

I wanted the 4 Runner, because it was the only SUV out there that still had some Off Road capabilities to it. It had a nice ground clearance, all the skid plates, good size tires, fender flares. Plus the insides were nice!!

Oh this makes me so mad!!!
Now I'm going to have to find a used 2002, that has all the options I want. And hope that somebody hasn't done anything to it.

Thanks Toyota for copying everybody else, and being totally unoriginal!

Errr, what were they thinking?

Chris
