If you have time, do the airbox mod while you're at it. All that stuff has to come out to get to it anyway. Getting to the alternator was the hardest part, still the whole swap took less than an hour. Keep us posted on how it works.

The guy that does his stators was on vacation for like two weeks and totally hosed his delivery schedules.

How much did that set you back? I need to rebuild mine from the whole scba diving experience with the Runner. I was just gonna have mine rebuilt, but I guess I could just upgrade at the same time! He also is only about an hour away from me so I could just go pick it up

 

Mark is right, Tom at Mr. Alternator hooked me up. I had wondered what happened with the delivery - thanks for the explanation. I wasn't in dire need for it or anything.

$245 shipped. $210 for the alt, $25 for the PC, and $10 for shipping. Hell of a deal IMHO. I think it's 140a hot, 120a at idle or something like that. Twice the output of the stocker as a minimum.

Cool. I chose not to get a powder coat job, basically just 'cause I couldn't decide what color to pick.

My electrical system is kinda' hosed, so I actually am anxious to get it. There's a huge gathering up here in the PNW the weekend of the 1st, and I don't want to run a blender without this.


What shipper did he use Cebby? He said that he was hoping to get mine out last Monday (the 14th) but it's gotta go coast-to-coast, so if he used USPS then it could be a bit yet. sigh.

I have three 120 amp units sitting on the shelf at my shop, but can't justify the cost of taking one home. Can you, or anyone else, explain why you think you need one for your rig and maybe it will help convince me to spend more money this week. I'm always up for more toys for the truck when someone tells me I really need them. Mine aren't a pretty bright yellow like yours so it's not as easy a decision. Thanks.

I'm beefing up my electrical system for two main reasons:

1. I've read that a stronger alternator will help all of the factory electrical gizmos on the 4Runner work better (slow windows, etc.)

2. I have plans to get a winch, a big compressor and (a while down the road) an onboard welder. Not to mention additional off road lights and larger stereo system.

I'm also planning to add a second battery at some point. Is this large of an alternator overkill? Maybe. It's a small price for peace of mind though.

I had a 150amp GM case alternator on my 87 Celica GTS. There was definitely an improvement in the power acessories with the extra amps.

 

For me...

• My stock alternator is done for. It's original and started limping a couple of months ago.
• A new "factory stock replacement" is about $180. So doubling the output for $50 more seemed like a smart thing to do.
• A 110amp custom wound from a popular PNW retail outfit was $391. That made the Mr. Alternator decision VERY easy.
• Since the truck was stock, I've added: Electric fans, a decent sized air compressor, a 1000/2000w inverter, CB, and a direct connect headlamp harness.
• I know that I'm not done adding stuff to the electrical system.

those Accels ignitions aren't for efi's right? only the distributor types? I have know idea but for 50 bucks, if one works on mine, I'll put one in

 

Keisur that's right, it wouldn't work on 3rd gens. We have coil packs over each spark plug on the left bank. Or is it right bank? I guess it depends on which way you look at the engine.

But yeah, those are just for 'distributored' morots.
