Need some tips on changing struts on my 99 runner

Hey guys,
I have already changed out my struts once by using a set of those cheapo harbor freight spring compressors but they were quite dangerous.
The 4 runner spring is narrow and stiff and those hooks barely fit in there.
I used them and wrapped the whole set up with a ratchet strap for protection.
Is there an easier way or maybe the V style strut compressor woyld work better?
Thanks!

A strut compressor mounted to a vertical surface works best.

Or remove your strut assembly and have someone with the correct tools swap the cartridges .

It is not really worth getting hurt to save a few dollars.

Has there ever been reported incidents of people getting hurt by these tools? I hear SOO many people say they're dangerous... but I've never seen or heard of any accidents.

Do you have any idea where one might look for such statistics??

I myself never took the time to look something like that up.

As your being carted into the ER After you prove your Obama Care is paid I am sure you want to state just what caused the accident .

I would bet unless OSHA is involved there are no real records .

I had done a few BMW's with a compressor from Sears. But the Runner fronts were too much for it--the hooks shifted in the middle of the job and bent the crap out of the thing. I had to get fresh underwear, then I took it to my local shop.

Not for the faint of heart or someone who has not done it before. Those are serious springs.
