I am back in a 3rd gen (98) after regrettably selling my 97 a few years ago. Maintenance has been my priority but I am at a loss with the front end. So far I have replaced shocks and springs (toytec 2") inner and outer tre's (OEM), upper and lower ball joints (OEM), steering rack bushings (poly), steering rack guide, steering pump (oem)with flush, sway links and bushings.

The steering/front end feels better but it still makes me nervous at highway speed, it feels loose and there is more bump steer than I feel comfortable with. I don't recall my 97 feeling this way but maybe this is as good as it gets?
Any ideas where I should look next? I am running 285/75/16 but I don't think that can explain things...

With taller wider tires you are going to get a lot of road feedback, if you are on older worn paved roads you will feel it pull you around. if not than I would be looking into upper and lower control arm bushings as you have already replaced all the steering rack bushings which are the usual culprit causing the rack to slip back and forth on the bushings.

 

Run your 285s at max rated pressure and see if it makes a difference, tires can make a HUGE difference. Even the way they're worn will affect it. What about your wheel bearings? If they've been replaced maybe they weren't torqued/preloaded properly- actually idk if the 3rd gens have serviceable wheel bearings (2nd gens do).
