Tip: Permanent Marker Removal from Car Exterior
Permanent marker is not easy to get off a carīs exterior without damaging the paint. However, there is a product called Stoner Xenit Citrus Cleaner which claims it can do just that. I havenīt tried it, so Iīd advise doing a little more research on it first.

I also read about using hairspray

Just remember that whatever is taking off the marker, is taking off the wax too.
Someone ever writes on my rig... ...I'll spray paint right over it! (Then park on their face... )

They have goof off in a spray bottle that is not as powerful and i used it to get tar off of a car but the paint was oxidized already and shined it up but newer paint may hurt it.

As Paul said, isopropyl alcohol will remove permanent marker. If you have strain ethanol laying around, that will work well too. We use both in lab all the time to remove writing from a sharpie or whatever.
Wipe carefully with a soft towel.

I second the paint thinner. Make sure its lacquer thinner. I used it for years in the body shop and it never once hurt clear coat. Its great for removing adhesive/tar/marker -anything.

not to hijack, but seems like this thread is solved. i have similar problem. i was very lazy and didnt take off license plate surround when painting it. i placed about a foot of tape all around the plate to protect paint from being spraypainted on...however i got some of the spray all over the tailgate. any ideas?
