Need help diagnosing a problem!!
Heres the vehicle specs: 2000 4runner limited, 3.4, auto, 4wd, elocker, 115k
I've had it now for about a year and a half and put about 20k on it, previous to this I have had no problems...also I'm not sure what the vehicles service history is prior to my owning it.
Heres my problem, the last several days I've noticed when completely stopped and the car is in drive (like stop lights and what not) if I let off the brake the car doesn't want to roll foward at all without giving it a little gas, like something is causing resistance.
To make sure I wasn't just imagining things I backed into my driveway today, which sits at pretty good downward angle, applied the parking brake, put the car in park and turned it off. I then restarted the car, with it facing downhill, released the parking break, put it in drive then slowly let off the brake and nothing...it just sat there. I gave a little gas just enough to get it moving and it nearly came to a stop again before finally started rolling foward like it should. Also when backing out of parking spot today there was a loud pop from the rear end almost like my locker was engaged and I was turning on cement. I got out and looked but could find nothing.
I checked my rear diff and tranny fluids, both were at proper levels and appeared to still be in good condition. I pulled into the field across the street and cycled through all of the 4wd modes with and with the locker and all did fine. I'm going to check the U-joints in the morning, I think that could be part of it but what else should I look for??? The rear drums maybe?
Thanks in advance for any help

Your bellcranks are frozen...follow your e-brake cables on the rear axle housing to them on each side....
For temp repair, disconnect the cables and beat them toward the backing plate(wheel side),secure e-brake cables to axle housing w/zip ties.....you will loose your e-brake,untill you fix them.
to fix you are going to have to remove them, chuck in vice, beat them back and forth and re-lube with grease....
sometimes they can be almost welded,If you do decide to replace them instead of un-freezing them ,you will have to buy individual pieces from the dealer, they do not sell bellcranks assembled...

97ltd4x4 is correct...most likely cause....frozen e-brake pivots
disassemble rear wheels
remove e-brake pivots
smash with hammer, loosen up, grease the hell out of them, use
hi-temp brake grease
replace e-brake pivots, fill boot with grease
now also if you ran like this a while your pads are likely worn down a lot
and also the drum may be pretty worn, so pay attention to that.

Mine had the same symptoms. It ended up being leaking axle seals. When the gear lube and brake dust mix they form a paste that gets on the drums causing the shoes/drums to stick. The vehicle does not want to roll once you stop.

If it is your bellcranks, which it sounds like to me, instead of just loosening and re-greasing (which is a very temporary fix if they are really bad), I recommend totally dismantling the bellcrank assembly, and hitting the parts with a wire wheel on a mini grinder to clean them off really well. Then, either grease them or coat them in never seize, put them back together and re-install them.

Looks like this may actually be the problem, I disconnected the ebrake cable from the bellcrank arms (which seemed to be operating smoothly) and I am still having the same problem.

Or if you want to get really scientific, get an infrared thermometer and put that in your toolbox. It has many uses
