My New POS
Hey all,
I decided I needed something a little more bush-friendly for 4x4 action than my 2nd generation 4Runner so since we needed a 2nd vehicle I picked this up last Saturday.
It's rusty in the quarters, fenders and tailgate a bit but the frame's solid. Did a compression check on the 22RE and got 155 PSI give or take 4 PSI. I think that's decent for the 270,000 km on it. Everything on it works and the interior is pretty clean.
The plans include SAS, 5 speed and T-case swap (for the automatic in it now) and a desperately needed lift. I'll be dismantling my 1990 and putting the CB, ARB, tires and wheels etc on this very soon.
I will have many questions and will likely need advice for things like the SAS and tranny swap.
I really enjoy this BB and although I'm not a super-active poster I definitely consider it my stomping grounds. It really is a 4Runner site at heart so how about different sections for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen runners? This would make it much easier for me to find info.
Today was my first day out in the thing and it drove well...
Here's what I've done so far...
- 1" bore Master Cylinder upgrade/swap from V6 Toyota and full system bleed. (more on this later)
- Plugs, Wires, Dist. Cap Rotor Rad. Hoses, PCV, Air Filter, Coolant flush, Oil Change, Brake Fluid Flush, tune-up etc...
- Replaced Thermostat
- Installed $28 no-name shocks in rear because I'll need different ones soon anyway.
- Aisin Hub rebuild in progress.
- Rancho add-a-leaf
- swapped the tires/rims from the 1990 onto the 1986
I'll keep you guys apprised of changes as I make 'em.
Best Regards,
Warren

Nice Rig. Dismantling the 2nd Gen? I don't think the ARB fits, does it? I wish I was closer so I could buy it from you. I saw a really clean 1st gen I want to talk to the owner about. I think it is the original owner. If the mechanicals are as good as this thing looks from the outside....wahooo!!!

The beauty of this thing (being IFS) is that everything will fit off my 1990. (well almost everything) I can put my sliders on it 'cause the wheelbase is the same and I can put my ARB on it because the front suspension is the same. I can even leave my ARB on with slight mods after I SAS.
The only things I will be left with are the Downey 1 1/2" spacer kit with Panhard and the SAW 25mm Torsion bars.
I've always wanted a 1st gen. Can't wait to take that top off, lift it, lock it, put 35s on it, SAS it, dual T-case it etc...
Actually, my initial reason for getting it was when I realized I couldn't, without great pains, put lower T-case gears or a dual t-case set-up in my 2nd gen.
Take care,
Warren

You're the body guy though right? Why do you suggest desert tan? I kind of had gun-metal grey in mind but my light coloured (white) 'runner really hid the bush scratches well.
Any other colours you'd recommend for durability/easy maintenance?
Thanks,
Warren

Camo camo camo
Hey Warren, nice find.
I'd sure like to have a project like that.
Here is a camo idea for you.
http://www.toyotaoffroad.net/tando/4...camorunner.jpg
And that maroon bobbed flatbed 2nd gen in the background is Bob William's.
That thing is really trick.
Sounds like you have some good plans for your rig.
And your ARB should fit according to 4x4 Connection's website.
http://www.4by4connection.com/4runnertacoma.html
Same part # for the 2nd gens like we both have, and for the earlier rigs also.
Hey, that white 2nd gen on their site looks very familiar

Thanks for the links Corey.
That's one of the best looking Camo paint jobs I've seen. White, grey and black. No green.
Good enough. Looks like some kind of wildcat.
Regards,
Warren
