Im thinkin about puttin a new muffler on. I've heard of some guys talk about Dynomax mufflers. What's the best kinda and why would i want to put a performance one on? I dont know much about all the mufflers out there. thanks.

 

I had a dynomax on my 3rd gen. It was growly up to 3000rpms then it would quiet for cruizing speeds. I liked it because you know somethings back there but nothing too noisy. Im waiting for someone to recamend one for the 2nd gen. They are inexpensive too.

 

I have a Magnaflow on mine, and dig it.
Do look through the old posts here though as this gets brought up quite often.

I just had the dynamax turbo installed last weekend and wow i was impressed.Nice sound at low rpms and real nice at the higher rpms to. i had the 2.25 pipe installed from the cat. all the way back and what a difference, thats the way to go. i have the 92 4runner 3.0. it set me back complete out the door $243.45. and that is txs,included. I have the magnaflow like Corey and I love it. Big improvement!!

 

I have the Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler on my 1992. I got it during the summer and absolutely love it. The sound, like said before, is not very loud or distracting, but you do know that it is there. I got the muffler, 2-1/4" pipe from the cat back installed for under $100 at Midas. They did a great job and I am really happy with the outcome. I got the muffler at Summit Racing . They were the cheapest and the best that I found. I would really recommend this. You will feel alittle bit of improvement at take off and acceleration...maybe 5 horses or so. Not much, but you can feel it and you can most definitely hear it. Goodluck! :fireman:

 

i vote for dynomax super turbo muff. thats what i got for my 93 runner. i got it for 49 i think from summit. like btown said, its pretty cheap. has quite a good tone to it in my opinion. i got it popped on for like 20 bux.

 

Do you get any noticeable horsepower out of one?

 

can you put a magnaflow or dynomax muffler onto the stock exhaust and get a good throaty growl, or do you have to do the cat back along with it?

 

You do notice a kick when you step on the gas. There is more uumph there and you feel the acceleration better. Not too much, but you do notice it. :fireman:

 

Glasspacks can get a bad rap, but I really like mine. Huge power gain? No. The sound is great at cruising and just right at WOT.

I got everything including installation for $60.

Its silver, so it somewhat matches the rest of the exhaust.

They welded it in place of the stock muffler. Good luck!

 

Another vote for Magnaflow. I really love the way mine sounds and haven't had a single problem in over 3 years.

 

What is the quietest one. I'm not in it for noise, but better breathing. Anyone know?

With the Magnoflow and Dynomax type mufflers (like in the pics on Corey's Exhaust page), you would just get a longer one and it will be quieter. Longer means they will have more baffling and insulation.

 

Ah, I see says the blind man! Will it decrease the performance, or is it noticable either way: longer or shorter?

Differences in performance should be almost negligable, in my opinion. I think thats the beauty of this type of design. You still have a uniform tube diameter, and the velocity of the gases should remain high enough to make a 'quick exit' Technically speaking, there are more perforations insinde the longer muffler, but I'd have to go find my fluid dynamics text book to see if it really mattered in terms of how much velocity you loose, due to turbulence caused by the increase in perforations.

I just had the Dynomax Super Turbo with 2.25 pipe from the cat back installed on my 90 4runner V6. Even with 221k on the motor, it made a big difference. It pulls to 4000 rpm much easier and quicker and the truck doesn't feel as lethargic. I've only put 2 tanks of gas in since the install, but the mileage looks likes its improved or at least doesn't go down as much driving around town.
As far as noise goes, it has a mellow rumble at low rpms, and really is sweet around 2500rpm. After that, you don't know its there, even at 75mph on the highway.
Only note is to get a muffler that fits flat between the driveshaft and rear suspension arm. They put a larger one in mine and hung it vertically so its lower than I prefer.
