muffler recommendations?

Fellow 4Runners: After 200,000 miles on my 89 V6, I'd like to replace my stock exhaust system. Nothing fancy, definetly nothing loud, but simply something that will allow the Runner to breathe better and gain a few more lbs. of torque and some HP if possible. A local muffler shop said a flowmaster system would work well, at an estimated cost of 250.00. Any recommendations?? Must be smog legal in CA also! Thanks

I've got a flowmaster 50 with 2.25 pipe and it has a little rumble to it....if you want not loud at all like stock then go with a flowmaster 60

people,

please use proper thread titles. "recommendations?" doesnt do much for anyone.

thus, the thread title has been changed.

thanks,

yea don't go with a flowmaster ,you may as well put a stockj muffler on ther e,its the worst flowing muffler you can buy ,try a dynomax super turbo ,or vortex or xcellerator i have that one on my turbo truck and it sounds nice ,not loud ,you want a nice flow thru muffler not one with a bunch of baffles in the way and step up to a bigger pipe ,2 1/4 is good and 2 1/2 if your thinking of a cam and header down the road.

A countless number of people on the forum have said they like their Flowmaster 40 series.

Flowmasters are loud and they have lots of reverberation. IMHO they flow good and are the best sounding mufflers on anything with 8 cylinders. They sound like crap on anything else.
I thought all the mufflers on http://pnw4runners.com/exhaust/exhaust.htm were pretty loud and slightly obnoxious.
You could consider running a genaric turbo muffler and if it is loud, install a glass pack before the muffler to act like a resonator. Toyota uses resonators before the muffler on Camrys because their isn't enough room to install one big muffler.

Have their been any tests to show that their are serious restrictions in the stock muffler? 4runners don't really make enough power to have huge gains in the exhaust system.

thats one website and since there is no author.. it could be a 10 year old kid making up numbers for all we know, in no way does that establish real proof of anything

Will running no muffler at all sound too loud??? My Magnaflow 14" basically sounds a little louder than stock?? Is it because I have my tailpipe dumped? Well anyways will I loose or gain hp/torque by just having a cat straight to the end of the tailpipe. Any comments???

you ever notice flowmaster never advertises ANY hp gain on ther ecrap ,read a box or ther eweb site sometime ,and as for that web site ,those numbers are pretty easy to back up ,and here is another test ,the pressure is a little differnt ,but they even had worse results with flowmaster.

" A moderately rebuilt Pontiac motor gets completely choked by restrictive compression bent system with stock turbo style mufflers. Additionally the test car lost about 10 HP when Flowmaster type deflector mufflers were used."

Go with a magnaflow. Just put mine on this weekend and with the K&N FIPK, I am pleased. It cost me $40 plus $50 for install. I also live in California and it just passed smog w/ the new muffler.

I have the Jardine 2-1/4 cat-back and the muffler is a straight through design and sounds decent without being loud or obnoxious. I've also used the long Dynomax mufflers like the one Downey sells and it sounded great without being too loud either. Exhaust is a tough thing to ask about without hearing a particular muffler on a specific vehicle. I would recommend a 2-1/4" muffler regardless of what brand you go with.
