How do you keep mud and water from shooing up from under the truck? I hit a mud hole one time and mud shot up from under the engine bay and hit the underside of my hood. That sucks seeing that everything in my engine bay was covered with mud,... I mean it wasnt like everything was caked with mud but that was alot of splatter everywhere,... is there anything I could get to keep that happening,...

You can get full skids like Gadget and a couple other guys. I think Trail Carnage makes some. They aren't cheap, but it should help.

Mud is not gonna have any way to get into your cat all the way though the engine. Just get rid of the cat all together, your engine will thank you, it runs a whole lot better without it. I took mine off. Plus a clogged up cat is gonna cause way to my much back pressure, not "not enough". Like everybody else says, take it all your intake, throttle body, filter and everthing apart, let it dry out. Take the plugs out and pump the engine over a few times, let it dry. Put everything back together and run a compression test. Doing all this is about the best you can do with it short of rebuilding the engine.

Oh crap, not another "I removed my cat thread."

First of all, its a federal offense. Second of all, your low-end torque is going to take a crap if you pull it, especially on a 22re. And, if you off-road your rig at anything less than 5K RPM, your gonna hate yourself for doing it.

Get a Carsound cat and do it the right way.

So much to learn. Yes, it's a federal offense and it carries some HEFTY fines. Some states will even impound your vehicle on the spot and through a $300 towing fee at ya ontop of everything else. Removing the cat really doesnt do all that much. If you need something less restrictive there several aftermarket options.

It shouldn't matter where he is from...you should still run a cat. I completely agree - it isn't worth the harm to the environment, plus the change of being caught, to get a slight gain in performance.

Now that was an intelligent reply! I bet you just convinced everyone to take off their cat. Good job!

I'll agree it's a federal offense, and it's bad for the environment. I've never had the cat off either of my 4Runners, nor plan to for that matter. The 87 never had any power, I don't think taking the cat off would change that. Being trucks, I don't really try to milk any more power out of them. Putting out 185 instead of 190 hp is fine with me. on the 99 I do disagree that cat's don't rob power. I hadn't run one since about 2000 on my old sports car, it robbed more power than the muffler ever thought about. It wasn't my daily and was mainly used for racing, so I felt it somewhat justified. I'm not going to tell anyone what to do, they can make their own decisions, we're all grown here and I don't feel it's my place to enforce laws or tell people how scummy they are because they don't run a catalytic converter.

I did run a "race" pipe on my Eclipse but turbo cars are a whole other story as opossed to NA engines. With the cat in place my Eclipse lost almost 3 tenths in the 1/4 mile but on NA cars thay need a little backpressure to increase torque thus is a waste to run catless;just buy a high flow cat and be legal.

I only went catless during the racing months and then went legal the rest of the year.

My 99, thanks for the comment about not telling us what we should and shouldn't do with our own vehicles and calling people bad for not running a cat. Mine didn't even have one on it when I got the truck and they're too dang expensive to buy one and since it robs power and you don't get fined if it didn't have one one when you bought the vehicle, I didn't put one on. I've worked on cars and trucks for quite a while now and worked in a garage for a while, so I know a thing or two. I don't need someone telling I need to go out and get one right now.

I don't know if what I just wrote made any sense but there it is

I agree, and I hope my last sentence of my past post wasn't taken the wrong way. I didn't mean to imply that I think one way or another, as I honestly have no hard feelings either way.
