Question MSD Ignition System...

I've been searching around the boards reading about the MSD Ignition Systems. Worth the money? What components do I need? Ignition Control Unit, Blaster Coil, etc? I'd appreciate anyone who could fill me in about this system, or recommend a better one. Thanks.

I ran a MSD 6AL with blaster 2 coil and 3 step limiter on my 95 Civic SI. I saw no noticeable performance gain, and I ran it at the track a lot.

I would spend your money elsewhere. It adds up quick and the bang for the buck is very small.

If you want to accelerate faster, regear the rear end.

Other ideas...

Electric fan(s)
Cold Air Intake
Header
Bored TB
Strip all excess weight off the truck

there are tons of mods you can make that are a lot cheaper then the whole msd setup and will give you a lot more power...... the msd mod is great if you have the $ and need to squeeze the extra few hp out of an already crazy modded engine... however, its not really going to do much on a stock engine jsut looking for more power....

I'm not exactly the greatest wrencher and that seems like it might be alittle difficult. What about having a 9lb flywheel installed, LCE Header, and maybe a Downey Midrange cam?

Another idea is to get a timing light and advance the timing and run premium fuel. You can squeeze a couple ponies by doing that.

Get a hold of "AZstorm" here on yotatech. He is running a modified 22RE that I think you would like. DOA cam, headwork, bored TB, etc...

I like the cam idea, but headwork should go along with a new cam profile to gain all the HP available.

When I put a cam in my 95 SOHC Civic, I lost .1 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Not a big deal really, but then again I didn't do anything with the head.

I think it would be a great idea to get yourself a FSM and some good tools.

i agree with Christian on the MSD. i have the DIS-2 on my car and i dont notice a difference. it's nice to have the 2-step for launching but that's about it.

a 9lb flywheel is LIGHT. you will probably need to rev the motor higher from a stop which will shorten the life of your clutch. not something to be too worried about but something you may not think about.

the best use for MSD ignition on a toyota is for trucks with webers that run offroad. the weber typically dumps a much richer fuel charge in your cylinders, and MSD will help keep your engine from flooding out with a longer duration spark that burns more of the fuel.

most guys don't really get any horsepower/mileage gains like promised though
