MPG's and 4:88 gears, whats the story?

i've been trying to decide on gears for a while, and am down to the wire. i'm stuck between 4.56 and 4.88's. i'm running 255/85's and will be towing a trailer cross country.

what are your mpg's with gears, is 18 gonna be possible w/4.88's

thanks,
J

Which truck is this for?

I'm assuming for the taco since you quoted a 16" rim size.

However, if it is for the 4runner, I'm running 33x9.50's (close to your tires), and 4.88's. I get about 22 city, 25 hwy. I've gotten up to 27.

which truck/motor?

i had 4.88's on 35's auto & some armour. was getting about 375km/tank. not the best, but i think my tank lost alot of capacity from dents etc. i was never able to get a full 60L tank's fill up. usually about 52L.

i averaged about 15 mpg, mostly hwy and lightfooting it all the time.

this is for the taco, most likely 5.29's are going in the runner.

With 4:88 gears and 35’s I have noticed a couple things
-Low end speed improvement, back to stock pep around town
-Highway speeds 65+ a bit harder to maintain speed with any hills w/o making the engine work a bit harder.
-70+ the RPM’s are noticeably higher, gas mileage starts to slip away at this point.
I drove to Phoenix at 60 and managed to pull a hair over 20 mpg. Around town I’m still getting the same mileage as with the stock gears and 285’s.
