Mpg

Well...just got back from the good ole gas station...

I had 154 miles on this tank and I added 13.7 gallons...thats 11.2 for MPG...that SUCKS

But that was with ECT on..and I'm a pretty rough driver. I acclerate real fast and I'm just an overall fast driver.

So...thats probably not the most accurate measurement in the world. This time I am going to keep good records and see what I come up with. Hopefully it will be a little bit better...is 11.2 normal for having ECT on the whole time?

I also use 89 octane gas..not sure if that makes a difference. I hope that this doesn't mean something is wrong with my truck. The only thing I KNOW of being wrong is a manifold leak on the drivers side. But it's going to cost well over 200 bucks to fix and I just can't swing that right now...could that cause the low MPG?

Thanks...just thought I would get some opinions on it.

I run 87 in my taco 2.4L. With roof rack and shell I get about 21mpg. When my mileage drops off I usually do a mini tune up(plugs, wires, rotor, and cap) and that usually set him straight.:beaver:

I routinely get 17mpg on a 3.4L for about 50/50 highway/city driving. Engine mod wise, the truck has the ISR and deckplate mod on it, along with a ignition/fuel piggy back computer and a free-flow exhaust. I run 87 octane.

My highway driving is usually around 70-75mph, I stay at the limit in the city. I don't jack-rabbit away from stoplights, but I do love to accerate onto the highway.

One thing you may want to try is to clean the intake path (MAF and throttle body) with Intake Cleaner (search the forum for previous threads) and then run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through your next tank as well (another search will help there too ).

When I did that to mine a few months ago, I picked up about 1 1/2 mpg.


Past that... being a lead foot burns fuel.

I am probably one of the slowest drivers you're even gonna hear about and I get about 12-13 in city driving.

I'll do an accurate measure the next time I fill up my tank and let you know exactly...

By the way, I own a '94 PICK-UP (3VZ).

You might want to do some tuning & cleaning. My MPG ranges from 11.67 (winter time & A LOT of stop-go rush hour driving) to a still disappointing 17.75 on the highway during the summer.

going to pismo i got 191 miles to 11.8 gallons, if i remember correctly (i have it written down in my truck). thats 16.186440677966101694915254237288 mpg. figure the bigger tire size.. somewhere around 17 or 18, which is REALLY good for a 3.slow pulling a 2 ton beast with 100lbs of camping gear, another 50 lbs of stereo, me, and going average of 75-85 mph

What I'm thinking about doing is running some injector cleaner and then some fuel system cleaner through and see what that does for me.

Just real quick...gimme a name of a good brand of injector/fuel system cleaner. Thanks again.

OK I kid you not. I get 22 MPG in my 4 wheel drive Tacoma with a V6 and an auto. BUt I'm extremely easy on it. I always excelerate smooth and decel the same way. I try not to flog it. Hey......I'm cheap so I go for the mileage route. I took it on Vacation and went through WV up and down all those mountains at 70-75 and got the best of 24 mpg so I was happy.

I noticed the biggest jump in mpg when I did the Deckplate mod. I went from 17-18 all the way to 22.

I consistantly get 18.7, but for a while I was going easy on it and was rewarded with a beautiful 19.6-19.9. I clean my MAF, air filter and throttle body on a regular basis and always use 87 octane. I accelerate fast, punch it on the highway and am a fast aggressive driver in general. So there's my story...

Do you think it's the 89 octane causing the lower mileage? It just seems like everybody who is using 87 is getting good mileage.

Once again...what are the best injector and fuel system cleaners? I did a search and it came up with mixed results...

What I brought away from my side of the "experiment" is that people love Redline products, but I got great results from using Penray's SuperX. I picked that one because it was actually the cheapest of the 7 brands they had on the shelf at the local auto parts store.

In short, I think it's worthwhile to use most _anything_, and you'll get good results by staying with a brand name that you know and feel comfortable with. So... Redline, Chevron, etc. Admittedly, I went outside of the "well known" brands and had (what I consider) great results.

Also... Check with any "warehouse" store that you may have around. At our local CostCo, I found a 4-pack of Chevron's cleaner for "cheap".

I don't think it's related to 89 octane. I have to run 89 in the summer because if I don't I get pinging. IN the winter I run 87 and don't have any. I think its related to the crappy summer gas. Actually my best mileage is with 89.

I think I'm going to run some Redline Complete Fuel System Cleaner through it and see what happens...hopefully my local auto parts store carries it...if not then I will just ask them for the best stuff they have and see what that does for me.

Thanks for all the advice...if any of you have anymore helpful hints or anything I should do lemme know.

I wish I didn't have such a lead size 14 foot....

Don't add it to a full tank, add it when you're about 3/4-1/2 full. If it's going to help your situation, then You should start seeing an improvement on the _next_ full tank of gas.


One other thing that may help... A company called "Restore" makes an oil additive product called "Engine Restorer" (http://www.restoreusa.com). The point of the product is to reduce/eliminate blow-by in the cylinders of older engines.

There are two sides to this camp, some folks say that running a "high mileage" oil in your engine has the same additives as what this product is, and you don't need it. Other folks say that it works really well.

It'll go into my crankcase for the first time tomorrow (112,000 miles) so I can't give you any personal feedback on it.

Hey Chris, if you do a search you'll find a LOT of info on mileage questions, higher octane gas and on a fuel injector cleaner called BG44K.

well u know how u guys are all talking about using fuel system cleaner that you pour in when filling up.. right? well all those after market fuel additives will end up in your oil. i read this somehwere (can't quite remember where) someone let me know if that right.. if it is, u should probably do it right before an oil change, at least i would.
