Motor and Tranny mounts

how can u tell if the motor/tranny mounts are bad? im just wondering cuz under accleration i hear a click like metal tapping, it could be my loose tail gate on my 91 pickup 2wd, but it seems a little too lud for the tailgate being loose, actually the tailgate isnt loose its the little bracket that stops the tailgate from swinging down too far. anyways are there some signs or ways to tell if thier bad?

If its an automatic, I hold the foot brake down HARD, shift into drive and watch for engine movement (the hood is open of course). Same for reverse. That checks both engine mounts. You will have slight movement, but if the motor tries to roll over in the frame, they be broke!

Transmission mount, use a floor jack and lift rear of trans slightly. Separation of mount means it is bad. DONT put so much pressure under the trans that you almost lift the truck!!

Basicly same thing with a stick, just harder to work the feet. Use hand brake.

Here is an old old thread that I think I will bring back to life!

I am suspecting that my motor and tranny mounts are not quite what they used to be after years of towing and doing jumps with a truck full of guys a few times. I definitely see some movement of the motor and tranny when giving her some gas with the brakes on. Also, at ~2500-3000 RPM I can feel the motor vibrate the frame more than it ever used to.

Anyway, I tried to tighten the motor mounts down some but I am getting the feeling that the guys saying how easy it is to replace the mounts are really playing a sick joke on me. How the heck do you get a wrench on those bolts? What tools do you guys use to get at them? Do you have to take any other parts out to reach? I almost feel like I need to remove the differential carrier... I have a 97 4x4 4Runner, btw.

if so, why do they want 350 to replace it, it seems to be only 4 bolts and the part is like 80$... can i do this myself?

Yeah, its not too hard. You just have to support the tranny while you're replacing it. I used a floor jack and some big lumber blocks along with a jack stand to hold the tranny up. You might have to remove the crossmember, but that's not too hard either. Shouldn't cost $350, I'd do it for you for way less than that.

Is that a picture of your actual mount? Mine looks like that if not worse.

I am starting to suspect mine is bad. I've got my tranny fluid at the right level finally and it shifts great. I still have a bump though, it's just not the actual tranny I think.

When I let the engine settle at speed (ie, coast) and then hit the gas, I feel a thud when the motor gets back up to correct revs to keep me at speed.

I jacked up the tranny just a second ago and the rubber easily stretches so that the bolt holds the tranny to the crossmember.

Maybe it's bad mounts that allow the drive train to twist and settle under load/no load?

mine does the same thing, you start to coast and then push the gas in and it feels like its twisting... of course mine also might be due to another issue that is not yet discovered, but i plan on replacing it anyways, its a cheap part, easy to get to, easy to do, so why not just to rule it out

Because I am broke I think I may be doing this very soon... I want to do the motor mounts too but I think I may be pulling lots of other parts to get to them with 4wd....

The tranny mount, called a rear motor mount on toyotapartsales.com is something like 63 bucks. I think I am going to be ordering one tomorrow.

Im getting a vibration when accelerating above 65mph in OD. If i back down to 60mph and shift into D the vibration comes back again. It appears to be rpm related and not speed related. But if i hold the speed it fades. it also vibrates if i take my foot off the gas too. i have lubed my u joints and slip joints. I wonder if my motor mounts or trans mount is bad. I ordered a new trans mount first because it looks like the easier one to replace. This is what mine looks like.

does anyone have a photo of before/after? Curious what a brand new tranny mount looks like installed. Pretty sure mine is bad too...lots of movement in the driveline under braking and acceleration and the shift lever seems to move around way too much. Mine is an 03 Pre-Runner 2.7L with 99k on it.
