Motor Rebuild and such

Wusup guys. My sister has a '92 4Runner SR5 V6. Recently it had a very big problem. From what I know, the #1 or #2 cylinder stopped recieving oil therefore causing her camshaft to go out.

Took it to a shop and this is what the bill said:

-New Rebuilt Motor $3,300
-Plugs $18
-Oil, filter & fluid $20
-Antifreeze $9
-Belt (doesnt say what kind) $20
-Gasket and thermostat $20
-Labor $650

TOTAL - $4037

Before this happened, I had little knowledge about 4Runners in general. But after - the engine looks the same....still dirty, still sounds the same.

It only has 73k miles on it....

WHAT the hell did that guy charge for???

A 'new rebuilt motor' should be pretty clean.
What caused her to take it to a mechanic in the first place?

Hey man, you just got ripped! Go back to the spank off and tell him to produce, then explain to him that you called the BAA (Beureu of Automotive Affairs). Call the BAA before you go! Explain to them the situation... A rebuilt engine should be a "new looking" engine! Twenty bucks says the rip off artist charged you for all kinds of stuff without actually using that stuff! Once the BAA hears of this guys crap they will be all over him, they don't dick around. Do you have any "garage/shop" friends that can help you out??? They can tell you what was and wasn't done to the vehicle.

Im sure the engine has a serial number somewhere. Might try to find it and with toyotas help be able to match a number with the vin. Then you will know if at least the block is different. Then if it is a new short block or long block, it would have a warrantee from the people where the repair shop got it from and would be tracked by serial number. Did they do an engine swap or just rebuild your core? Might have rebuilt someone elses core, and put it in yours. They may have put some of your items back on a new shortblock or something, but it should show some newness somewhere. I know that I can see the heads are much newer looking on mine after I had head work done. Good luck.

From what I KNOW - this was caused by oil not getting to the #1 or 2 cylinder.

Also, from what I know....it was a rebuild kit. Not a brand new engine.

But in a re-build kit....doesnt that include: new pistons, rods, cams, heads, and EVERYTHING?

yeah a re-build kit includes gaskets, rings, rods, seals etc... It just doesn't cost $3300.00 You could have a totally re-manufactured engine for that!

$3300.00 is a new remanufactured engine installed!!! That includes labor and all of the engine... not just some parts. Call around and get some qoutes, I gaurantee it ain't 3300.00 for just what you mentioned you got. It should be as clean as the day it rolled off the lot under the hood and run as clean as well...
