mod to clear 15" wheel

I love 15" wheels and wanted them on my current '96 runner. So I took some material off my calipers to clear the 15 steel wheels. I used a grinder and slowly grinded the caliper down till the wheel no longer hit. Why? Wheels are cheap. Tires are REALLY cheap. More tire to air down with. And I like the look of a 15". Here are a few pics.

My rig on 35" BFG KM2's...And no body lift. Just many hours of work.

I do kinda agree with you. I took a risk when I did it, and was not sure what the outcome would be. Since then I have towed trailers up and down mountains and stopped big tires for about 15,000 miles, and I have had no problems at all.

even with a 4" bs, you still need to grind?

there shouldn't be no issue from the grind. i'd do it

I believe the back spacing is -15.

Yeah I am a firm believer that wheel spacers are not safe. Some would probably call me a hypocrite for saying that. But at work we are so against wheel spacers, I guess I am now too personally.

Sorry I tried google image search for stock caliper and couldnt find a good pic.

Cpizzle,
I've got the ss 1.2 front and rear & I'm planning on doing the same as you, make the 35's fit without any more lift. Also I'm with you on the 15" wheels as the better choice.
Did I read correctly that you are running a 15X8? Isn't that a little narrow for those 35's?
And what back spacing do those wheels have, 4"?

I am running the 15x8's so the tires are less likely to come off the bead when aired down. I forget the backspacing, but that sounds about right.

It all depends on how much you take off. There should be enough leeway in the casting to allow a decent amount, though I wouldn't go more than 1/8" without pulling a piston to measure the actual thickness.

Red face

If you have caliper problems will you just rebuild yours.

Talking to my auto parts vendors they all said the cores would be rejected .

I had thought of doing that myself but passed. To many Lawyers with nothing to do.

Hey cpizzle42, Can you post more pictures of the calipers? I recently did the same thing on my rig. And would like to compare my calipers with yours, to see how much material you grind off of your calipers. Thanks!

Too many lawyers with nothing to do? You can say that about anything.
I did this at 194k and now have over 214K. I think I ll be alright man.

And why would I need new calipers? I would just rebuild the ones I have if the seals on the pistons went bad.

Not sure what anlge of picture would better show how much I took off. Not trying to sound rude, but really just take off as little as possible, assuming you went with the correct offset. I probably took off around .075-.100

Well, my wheels have 3.75" BS. If I stop a little hard I'll get a temporary caliper rubbing while applying the brakes (only when stoping hard). Otherwise no rub at all.
