A few cherokee guys have done this:

For those of you that don't want to cut your sheet-metal, nice alternative.

Cool

Awwwww...bust out the Sawz-All and rip some holes in that fender! I thought of doing a mirror mount sig...but it's too late now. I like my JDM Altezza markers. Good idea though...

In my best DeNiro voice..."you talkin' to me?" If so yoda, I got 'em here. Damn tricky shape to cut and you have to hard wire the socket connector. If you need details, let me know...I got pics.

Hey yoda. Being the OEM markers, they came with 194 wedge base incandescent bulbs. It has an amber glued in cap which I did'nt like (looked too stock) but I did'nt waana break it. I got some 194 based LED's (hyper-white) to use and it turned the amber, yellow. I was glad as it now matched my rear turn sigs which are Japan yellow. I knew it would not come with the factory female connector. Toyota won't sell the connector either, have to buy a complete wireing harness. I tried earlier when I did my front turn sig/park light mod. I soldered wires to the male leads and hooked it up. I lost my message earlier as I have to keep going to my album to post pics. I'll post the rest in a following message.:pat:
Side markers and LED bulbs

Cool Side marker pics only

Left connector cut to expose leads for soldering
Wires soldered, heat shrink and filled with hot glue
The odd shaped hole-3M rustproofing on edges
This mod is not for the faint hearted. I was sweating and felt sick drilling, using the nibbler (worked OK, but scratched paint and distorted sheetmetal) and finally the Dremel. I'm very please with the results, especially getting a self inflicted dent I caused installing the marker, fixed! There are generic markers I thought of using, saw some on Ebay where only a 1" hole is needed, but I wanted a Toyota product on my Runner. I have the template I made if anyone wants to use the JDM Altezza (IS300) markers.

Nice job, butnut. Signal light looks great. You're more brave than I am. I still can't bear to drill into the metal myself. Well, maybe for the rear deflector but that even makes me cringe...

Jason,

I like it. I've always like the Mercedes lights in the mirrors.

I like the idea of having the light on the outside end of the mirror. The driver next to you can see the turn signal. Don't see the point of that one on the front of the mirror. Good job on the wiring. I like to see it when people do the extra time to do it "right".

i too have been looking at the merc mirrors and quite like the idea of them and was wondering about this mod and if there would be enough room as i have electric mirrors any one any ideq if there is room in there?

b.t.w i have small circular turn sigs in my front fenders and i think that i will be able to get somthing like butnut`s sigs that will go in to the existing holes i will have to check in to that.

Thanks guys. Hey Mark, are those circular fender sigs a stock item that came with your Runner? If so, I'd like to see a pic...I know side markers are required in Japan and probably in UK? The US is slow to catch on to these important safety items...

I have the Mercedes sidemarkers on my 1st Gen and think they are great, and surprisingly they were the best deal!

I thought about doing the mirrors but decided against it.

I saw a cool feature on a friends 2001 Explorer that I really like and may do, when the alarm is deactivated a set of lights under the mirrors illuminate the ground and doors. Very nice.

I am curious if you guys are doing this mod for practical purposes or just to be a mod. I something simliar that they did to my Runner for the light conversion here in the UK. The just added some small amber pieces that stick out off my park lights and flash with the blinkers. I can post some pics if anyone is interested in seeing them!

Sounds like you UK guys have some unique items...when you can, I'd like to see 'em. This side blinker is a safety 'mod' that is just something I did to get the look of the Japan vehicles. They had a reason for putting them on in Japan and other countries...It's an aid to drivers around me to show my intentions should they be in my blind spot and can't see my tails. I know they have already helped. Sure wish all vehicles had 'em...with my big mirror on the door, it blocks the tails of cars slightly ahead and to the side of me. I always speed up or slow down so they see me and I'm aware of what they are going to do...
