You send an empty box via UPS and it'll cost ya $9 if it is bigger than 6x6x6. I don't imagine they are getting rich off $9 shipping charges....

Doesn't sound that bad to me. How far is that going Ca. to Pa.? Have you seen the price of gas lately? You can get the price of shipping from the UPS website. Just enter in the weight, box size and zip codes. The Marlin may have made $1 for their trouble of packaging it and labeling the box.

Have you actually checked the shipping price and found it to be too much or are you assuming it is based on "polyurathane isnt very heavy"? I have no idea the size or weight of the package but at UPS.com, a 1 lb./5"x5"x5" box from Marlin's zip to a random zip in Pittsburgh is $6.50 (yes, I'm bored). Actually shipping something in that box for $9 doesn't sound bad to me.

What about the box, the time to put it in the box, any packing material in it, the UPS account charges, etc. I think you will find most places that ship stuff mark up shipping a little bit to cover their time and materials.

And if you are avoiding the shifter because of shipping charges alone, that sounds fishy to me.
