Manual Tran - Squealing/Grinding in 3rd and 5th gears..

Hi all ..

ive always wanted a toyota 4WD and just got my 1988 , 5 Sp, 4WD, pickup today with the 22-RE .. i thought it was a good deal at 118K miles as it felt great when i test drove it and ive heard so much about the 22 RE reliability so i didnt even hesitate to buy it as ive always beleived in toyotas and my old 88 camry, 5sp with the 3SFE had 183K and was running like "silk" when i sold it a few years ago ..

so then, i was driving it back home a few hours ago .. its about a 150 mile trip home and since the freeway was quiet i noticed that there was a slight squealing/grinding noise ONLY when i was driving in the 3rd gear and 5th gear and this is when i was stepping on the gas pedal.. when i took my foot off the gas pedal the noise dissapeared.. it makes the noise again when i step on the gas both in 3rd and 5th gears.. however, the truck was runing great and very quiet in 2nd and 4th gears ..

i am ˟˟˟˟ scared and worried if its the manaul tranny.. i thought toyota manual transmissions were good for 200K plus and ive always been driving manuals all my life without problems..

is the transmission blowing out on my on the first day of ownership ?? the truck was perfectly smooth in , 2nd and 4th gears .. i didnt want to risk the 5th gear and the noise was irritating and i coasted home in 4th doing 55 mph and i got 27mpg driving back home ...

so im guessing the engine is fine ..but somethings wrong with the tranny .. what can be the problem ? tranny or something else ?? i cant beleive a toyota manual tranny will blow on me at 119K miles ?? the old owner must not have know how to drive a manual ? or is this a common manufacturing defect / common toyota problem ?

guys .. id really appreciate some info on this .. i cant even afford to pay for my title and reg. until i get paid next week and i cant even think of the manual tranny going out on me so soon ..

im in the 41056 zip code in kentucky and id really appreciate it if someone around here can help .. or give me some advise on finding the problem .. or even take a look .. please help !!!

i also have to report that there is NO grinding or any noise "while" shifting grears .. the shifts are very smooth and precise like my old camry .. the noise is only coming after shifting into 3rd and 5th gears and when im on the gas ..

i too have the same problem except i wont call it grinding, more a humming noise, in 3rd barely but in 5th is more noticeable. my truckhas 117k miles, i've driven it for 3k miles since i got it. so i dontknow, i've asked on here once but seems like no one knows.

Mine's the same, except it started in 3rd, and now 5th is noisy too. Mine started at about 150,000 and I'm now getting close to 180,000. The whining/humming is a sign of the transmission wearing out and needing rebuilt.

It sounds like the tranny is starting to die. Mine makes a whine in all gears except 4th and while in neutral with the clutch out. It's quiet when the clutch is pressed in. Found out that it's either the input or output bearing and possibly a synchro.
