howdy, i have a '84 toyota pickup with a 22R motor and the oil leaks quite profusely. im asssumin that its comin from the main oil seels. i know i have to pull the engine and what not to do all of this, but is there anyone who has done this before and can give me some tips on it. or maybe even a website where i can get some pictures and what not. i have a haynes manual and im sure that will help. are there any weird tricks i need to know? i normally drive a 88 ford bronco, fullsize, and i know how to replace the main seels on that, so im assumin the yota will be alot like the ford. thanks, David

 

Is it leaking from the front or the rear of the engine?

You don't have to pull the engine for either one.

 

heres a neat trick for the front one--

get a 1/2" breaker bar and a 19mm socket for the crank pulley--
then stick the breaker bar on the bolt next to the passenger side of the frame. Unplug the igniter and crank the ignition for like a half a second-- that will break the bolt and you wont even have to yank on it. I did that with my 88 and it worked great. then put the seal in with a socket and a hammer.

i dont have to pull the engine? r u sure? its leaking mainly from the front but from the back too. its just leaking all over. i hadnt looked it up in the manual, but dont u have to drop the crankshaft in order to replace the seals? if i dont have to pull the engine, then please elaborate on the subject. i need some help.

 

you must pull the tranny.

 

You don't need to drop the crankshaft. The rear seal requires dropping the transmission and is more involved than the front seal.

 

just do the front one first, the rest of the oil might be blowback...

 

naw, theres no way its blowback, bc you can all the oil on the ground. by sayin blowback, do u mean blow-by? im assuming thats what u mean, and the truck has never shown any signs of blow-by.

 

Blow back is oil that is blown back by the fan.

Blow by is internal and you can't see it from the outside. It's caused by worn piston rings, worn pistons, and worn valve guides.
