Main Bearing Question - 22 REC
I am considering buying an 85 extended cab 5 speed 22-REC with 212,000 miles. Seller is asking $900 OBO. The truck is pretty solid except the main bearing rattles at higher RPM's. How much work is it to replace the main bearings and what other parts will need to be replaced as well. Is it worthwile to invest in this truck or keep looking. Would it be better to swap motors with another 22 RE or is there a better engine which could easily be swapped in this truck. I am fairly new to Toyota trucks so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andrew

If you're going in to do the main bearings, you're just a step or 2 away from rebuilding the entire shortblock, so may as well.
Have a look at engnbldr.com for prices on rebuild parts.
As for swappable motors, the 22r (lazer block) series was used from 1985 to 1995, in longblock form they are all identical.
There are minor differences between the carb, EFI, 2wd, 4wd, and celica versions, but all will work by swapping your intake/exhaust/oilpan onto it.
Hope this helps,
Todd
