I have a quick question about the Magnaflow HighFlow Cats. My nephew just purchased a 94' 4Runner from his neighbor, bone stock SR5 in mint condition. Now he wants to start modding it and change out the Cat, to a High Flow Magnaflow cat. I told him to measure the stock Cat and go to the Magnaflow website and check them out. One problem though, the measurement on the stock Cat is 20.5" and the Direct Fit one on the Magnaflow website is 17 5/8". My question is has anybody else had this problem and if so how did you get around it, did you order a different model # or did you add to the Cat or the exhaust itself...?

 

I haven't done this but I would think you can just extend the pipe during the install process. Since the cat isn't OEM, you'd need someone to weld it on.

 

Just take the cat. to the exhaust shop and they'll make it fit no prob.

Thanks, But I think he is looking for the one that just bolts on...? Not to much of a wrenchhead yet, He's just eighteen with a new vehicle and money burning a hole in his pocket, dying to get out and I'm trying to help him to not get separated with too much of it.

 

Exhaust shops will do the install for $30. Also, I would look into if you want to trust aftermarket cats. You might loose emission numbers, while not gaining any performance. My recommendation is wait 'till it's broke and then replace with OEM.

 

Thanks for that little tidbit, I'll have to pass that along about the emissions, he hasn't got it smogged yet so he's gonna have to wait either way for the Cat, he wanted the High Flow Cat for the performance among other things, he also says that it's clogged...? I don't know about that, because I can't get back there till the end of the month to check it out, hell, I would'nt know how to tell if it's jacked up anyway. I'm gonna tell him to screw it all, take if off and throw the whole shootin' match in the dumpster and get headers and a new exhaust all the way back.

 

How many miles does he have on the rig? If he's got more than a little over 100k then there's a good chance that it is clogged, the high-flow cats really don't do THAT much for performance unless you've got the high-flow cat and an aftermarket muffler.

As for emissions I have no idea, here in the boonies of Arkansas we don't have state inspections so not a big deal for me.

He said it had a 106000 or so when he got it two weeks ago, who knows now, eighteen years old with a new(to him new) 4Runner.

 

I've gone through this, and like most fiolks have said, it's a simple install for an exhaust shop. In short, they'll extend the pipe between the cat and the muffler to make up the distance.

Smog wise... no sweat, you'll pass just fine.

Just match the cat size pipe diameter to the exhaust pipe size - stock is 2.25".
