I agree... sliders would be the best choice. However, unless you are handy with a welder, the cost is quite high to buy the sliders and then have pay someone to weld them on for you. I looked into this option, but couldn't justify the money for something that would be purely cosmetic. I didn't plan on ever doing any rock climbing, thus necessitating sliders.
I went with some Westin Nerf Bars and really like them. I only wish they tucked under my truck a little better... but with the 2" body lift, it just wasn't happening. I paid $200 shipped from a company on eBay and they took like 20-30 minutes to put on myself. Well worth the small investment. Good luck... hope this helps.

Take the running boards off for sure. I was extremely pleased with how much taller my 4runner looked with out them. I put Manik nerf bars on. If you do a lot of wheeling get the sliders though for sure.

dont think you only need sliders if youre doing hardcore rock crawling... your rockers will take a beating with that mentality.
cant wait to get mine on so i can do some harder trails sooner than later.

totally agree with what lee said.
and keep in mind, if your going through a tight trail, the sliders (if they stick out a little, which they should) will keep those things away from your beautiful doors.
i just dont understand why people get nerf bars when sliders REALLY arent that much more expensive, and they serve a whole nother purpose. ok so you get the nerf bars...why? to help get into the 4runner? even with my total of 5 inches of lift, and 33's, i dont use my sliders to get in....but if i needed to, i could, they would help just as much as nerf bars.
ok so then youd say, well the part itself wouldnt cost much less, but theyre easier to put on and you dont have to get them welded on....well you can bolt your sliders on as well...mine are bolted on, and ive jacked up the 4runner ON the slider and it hasnt budged but maybe .5 cm....
sorry if i sound like a jerk, i just cant stand nerf bars....they belong on xterra's/pathfinders and domestic trucks

Fuzion, you're kinda defeating the purpose of getting rid of the running boards to only put on some nerfs. The cool thing as others have stated on this thread is that your truck will "look" taller w/o the running boards. Since you haven't lifted the truck, do you really need some steps to get in? Although the nerfs look better than running boards, it takes away the "taller" stance that you're going for w/o the boards. My two cents...
BTW, install of some sliders will be around $100 for a welder in case you wanted to know.

Another vote for sliders. I've had Manik tube steps, sliders, running boards, and no running boards, and my favorite setup by far is Stubbs sliders.
If the ebay nerf bars don't work, I've got a set of black Manik tube steps that I'd love to sell

Thanks for the opinions guys. I decided not to go with the sliders since the nice ones are about $300 plus shipping and welding. I bought some black nerf bars for $124!

sorry but that was the figure I thought I paid, it might have been 30 a piece. Anyhow I preferred that mudflap choice as it flows together with your current fender flare
