I am looking at getting about a 99-02 tacoma. The only thing is that with the price gas should i get a 4cyl or 6cyl. let me know what you think about the 2.7 it is worth lossing the power or is it worth saving the gas???

ahh this question again
ive never been behind the 3.4
my dads runner (which i now frequently drive while my 91 is out of comission), has the 2.7, behind the 5 speed when you get up there in the rpms it can hold its own. I've always wished it was the 3.4 though so i could drop in the supercharger.
but gas isnt getting any cheaper.

I drive a 2.7.. but ive driven my friends 3.4, and another friends SC'D 3.4.. Your gonna get the responses on hear saying that the 3.4s get only 1-2 mpg less that the 2.7, which is true. But the way I see it is that if you drive the 3.4 steadily you can see about 17-18(pretty good).. If i drive my 4 banger 2.7 conservatively i can get about 22-23. But what i like is that no matter how hard i drive my 4 banger ill never see less than 18.5. Which i think is pretty cool. Where as i see reports on here of people saying they got lows of 14-16 in the 3.4. Which isnt very pocket friendly.. I think the 2.7 is peppy enought for most anything. I tow jet skis 250 miles with it at 65 with the AC getting 17-18 mpg. So its your choice. Oh and by the way, ive done little friendly races with my buddies 3.4 and i can hold him to 3rd, but then the 3.4 just smokes me.. So the 2.7 isnt a total burden to drive.

I live in a higher elevation, tow a fishing boat every now and then, and go up the canyons often, so the V6 was an obvious choice. But if I had the 2.7L 5-speed, I wouldn't complain too much. However, given the choice, it's V6 for me. I just got back from a road trip. First fill up, I got 23MPG (99% highway). The second, I got 20MPG (spent about 10% of that climbing a steep muddy hill in 4x4). Not too bad for a V6 and about 500lbs of gear and one passenger.
