I've got 173k but have been running oversized tires for the past 50k or so miles so who knows what it really has? 178??

I did have to change the head gasket at around 160k

Well it sounds like I need a 3rd Gen 4Runner.... I appreciate all the comments and keep it up! I'd also like to hear from anyone that has had one fail and when/why.... Is it just the 96-97s that have the head gasket recall, or is it 98's as well....

Would it bother any of you to buy one with 165K already on it? I know with 22REs, 200K doesnt even make me blink.... Is there anything I should be really concerned with at that time? What about the auto trannies?

High mileage wouldn't phase me one bit on these vehicles and in fact I'd almost prefer it since it shows that the vehicle has been pretty well debugged. The trannys are pretty solid as well. You always want to be concerned with slippage or lagging gear changes, no surprise there. Condition of the fluids, maintenance records, timing belt, etc. Leaking rear axles can manifest themselves at times, but are easily fixed as well.

I think everything is in order on this truck, except for maybe the t-belt. Considering taking it for a test drive, pulling over and popping the cover off to look at it. Anyone know what tools are needed and the amount of time/work to get a look at the t-belt?

you will need a 10mm socket a rachet and maybe a small extension & flashlight. cover comes off quick check the belt and check the water pump for leaks. if it is leaking you will find something similar to what battery corrosion looks like.

235,000 and counting. The longer I drive this truck, the sooner I can retire.

mine went about 259,00 before the head gasket blew. Just regular maintenance as far as i know. the original owner didnt want to fix it, so my shop bought it for $500, and they put in an engine and sold it to me for $3,500. it has 270,00 now.

Tranny fluid

I was told not to mess with the tranny fluid ever. I heard that when you change out the factory fluid in the tranny thats when it all goes down hill!
