Factory switch on the dash. If not doubt aftermarket.

Switch would say "RR DIFF LOCK"

Factory TRD rear lockers didnt come out until 1998, anyhow.

To check for an aftermarket, search for the tire-spin method. Or drop out the rear differential.

And wiring/motor on the rear diff are a sign there's a diff locker there.

I've got one on my 97, but you're right. 96 didn't have a diff lock. If it does have one it must be aftermarket.

If it's selectable then it has to have some kind of switch. It might be a ratcheting one. If it is you might be able to hear it if you turn really slow on pavement.

They didn't come as a factory option on the Tacoma until 98. 4Runners were lucky enough to have them in 96.
