Locked and geared

Ok, i want to get locked and geared in the rear, but my budget is $700. whats the best way to go? i was jsut going to get a ez locker but i have 33" tires and it specifically says not to use it with 33" or bigger tires. anyone experience that? what i want is 5.29 gears and a detroit locker but i dunno if that would fit my budget because of the cost to install. would it be cheaper if i bought the full 3rd and installed it myself? how how is it? help please!

Edit: also anyone from socal know a good place that does this kind of work? thanx!

Guess ARB's are out of the question.

Gears alone are roughly $1700 with installation. At least that was one of the figures I was given recently from a local who had just done this. You have a standard transmission I take it? 4.88's if not. If they should be cheaper, I would like to hear some quote estimates.

I guess the gear install would be cheaper with 2WD for you though.

I agree Darren, that price is ridiculous. I paid $2000 for my entire gear/locker project. That was for a brand new Toyota electric locker, locker ECU & switch, 4.56 gears, Detroit LSD front, and labor.

I was quoted locally about $1800 to install just an ARB Air Locker in the rear, and keep my stock gears.

They have to put in new Tinkem bearings though as they don't reuse the old ones.

Yes, most of that is labor.

I also called another shop, Randy's Ring & pinion in my state.
This was for new gears of 5.29s front & rear, and without a locker.
Price was about $1300 or so.

Again, it's the labor that kills you.
I would no more try and setup my own diffs than I would try to do brain surgery on someone.

Some things are best left to those who posses the skills who have done this before.

Phong, I thought you did those projects yourself? If so, that is where the $$ difference comes in.

Amen to that!

Nope, but I did help a lot. Gears run about $100-$200 per diff. Labor runs about $200-$400 per diff (I paid $400 on labor for my front, but it's cheaper on the West coast).

4.56 rear gears were included w/ my locker so that helps too. Any way you look at it, $1700 is a ripoff for just re-gearing. $1000 is more like it.

First off, if you have 4WD, you have to regear your front differential as well. Secondly, if you remove your third member yourself, it'll be cheaper, it's easy to do, plus you get to smell that delicious gear oil.

Personally, I'd save my money and get a selectable locker (Toyota/ARB). You have a nice truck and I wouldn't want to compromise its onroad ride by installing a full-time locker....

im only 2wd Phong. i just want to get the most out of my truck. i wasnt going to bother with the locker before but i recently got stuck because my 1 driving wheel was spinning in the mud while all the rest had traction. thats when i decided it was time to get locked. i would at least have 2 wheels turning rather than just one.

OK, then I suggest buying a Detroit locker, Precision/Yukon gears, and a mini-install kit (new seals). You can buy new bearings but I don't think it'd be necessary on such a new vehicle. Then pull the third member and bring all the parts into a shop. You should have no problem finding a cheap reputable shop in CA. Or you can have the shop order the parts for you also, but you might end up paying more for them.

Make a post here to find a shop:

Lots of those guys are from CA.

the $165 doesnt inlcude install kit, and Toy kits are expensive. thats a good price on the detroit tho. so about $625 for parts plus tax or shipping. then youre looking at another $500 for install.
