Little Update...

Sorry I haven't been on the forum lately, Ive missed some good pissing contests!

Well, for a little update on my truck. I took all the seats out and hosed out all the carpeting first trying to get as much mud out of the carpet. Then I got some carpet cleaner and brushed it all out. I took a hose to the bottom of the truck as best I could. I have a bad feeling that I was in brackish water  . But we shal see. The headers looked really rusted/lots of oxidation. I don't know if it was because of the quick temp change or what. It went off to the shop via tow truck wed and they have yet to get back with me with an estimate and they are going out of town today for the weekend or something. I found an import place honda/toyota specialists. I tend to like the local shops better. I went in and talked to them first and they said they have been through the same problem with one of their sons so I think i'm in good hands. Some things I did notice though when we pulled the truck up on the tow truck. It sorta seemed like the wheels were locked...? We had to pull it up at an angle so that might have been it. I don't have locking diffs and both of the gear selectors were in N. That kinda worries me as that will jack the fixing costs big time if I have to replace the diffs. Though a great time to get lockers!! Whos got the best prices? Would anyone want to get a group buy? The battery was dead so I couldn't test any of the electricals after about 2-3 days. It was an old crappy battery anyway. Does anyone happen to know if the 2jz or the MKIII supra engine would fit in the 3rd Gen with not TOO many mods?? ok... getting a little over my head... but yeah... I'll let you know what they say on monday. I am really missing my truck. I have never needed to just go for a ride this bad ever. Everyone have a good weekend and I'll update again on monday.

I called the insurance company and its kinda funny but my agent is going though the same delima about totalling it or not. The cut off will be $6K. I really love the truck and I will be driving a POS if it gets scrapped. Man... since the new 4Runners came out... my car has lost $5k in value in less than a year. It was 20 something last summer. Now its only worth $15,300

Wow, that sucks, I'm now afraid to know what mine is worth!

I WISH they would have totaled my Blazer when it got wrecked. I think the bill was over $7,000, and stupid GEICO wouldn't total it. Not even after the 1st shop did such a total hack job on the repairs, that I had a Chevy Dealer document in writing that the car was unsafe to drive. Nope, they just sent it somewhere else to have it re-repaired. I got rid of that thing as fast as possible.

Can't find it... so i'll re-tell it.
Ok, I was out with a couple of buddies in this off-roading spot that I had been to maybe twice before. We were in there for about 45min... we were just bored with nothing to do, so we decided to go 4wheeling. There were some guys shooting skeet about 2k feet away (we werein the middle of nowhere). On the way out you have to go through this swampy section. I thought I was going out the same way I came in... but this mud hole was quite a bit deeper than I thought. SWOOOSH, we go into the hole at like 12-15mph. I immediately kill the engine so I don't suck in any water. (Luckily the right side was out a little higher than the left) Then it was quiet for a second... til I let out the initial ˟˟˟˟˟˟!!! Then we went quiet for another second, and I could hear the water slpilling in. I immediately rolled the roof back and jumped out. All my friends were saying the usual curse words every few seconds. I was controlling myself quite well though. I ran to the guys that were shooting skeet and ofcourse the guy with good tires had bad hubs or something so he only had 2 driving wheels. The other had city tires on a bronco. No WAY that was getting me out. By this time a couple other friends showed up to help/investigate. Thats when I went ahead and called AAA. We went to a gas station to wait for the tow truck. Luckily i was almost out and he could get to me. He really didn't want to come out, but my gf was like, my Honda made it out there, you can make it, and they then agreed. While we were waiting a HUGE bronco pulled into the station. I went over and asked what they were up to tonight. It was two high school kids and they had nothing to do and were obviously into 4wheeling, so they agreed to help. (he had like 38" mud boggers on it) He had a tow strap, but no luck. He didn't have the best traction and my truck was Frekk'n stuck!. So then the tow truck showed up, and this was when it was getting pretty dark. The tow truck had no prob pulling me out. I WANT A WINCH!!! That was first on the mod list (with an arb/tjm). Then they can't take a credit card on the spot, and I did'nt have $150 cash on me so I let them take it. This was on a sat and they were closed on sun. I went monday to get my car and they made me pay for sat. sun. and monday! i was like what??? so the bill was like $200 to get me out and AAA doesn't cover it. They did have pay to bring the truck to my dorm and then to the shop where it is right now.

Check my site for more pics (at bottom)

So is the engine dead? I did something similar..cost $2500 to replace it. $1500 for a '97 engine w/ 55k and $1000 to install. Dont forget to drain those diffs.

wow, thats a perfect example of why you should check the water depth BEFORE you go running in :pat:

I don't know if the engine is dead. It ran the day after it happened, but I haven't tried running it since. Hopefully its still ok. There wasn't any water on the inside of the filter, and no water in the oil. We shal see on monday...

I'm sure he's aware of that now... that is if he didn't already know before.

turboale:
Good luck getting everything settled! Hopefully, you run into minimal snags with insurance.

About the depth thing. The reason why I didn't check was because I thought I was on the same path that I took on the way in (the way I had been before multiple times) so I just kinda figured it wasn't deep. I knew there were deep holes, I just thought it was one over to the right, and the one I went through wasn't as deep. oops!

Kudos for having the presence of mind to shut her down fast. Alot of people probably wouldn't have thought of that right away. Good luck with the insurance folks and i hope it turns out well for you.

My consolation

Well I just have to say I for one am depressed! I actually ALMOST had the same thing happen to me two days ago. The front passenger corner dipped in the water really low (not nearly as low as yours -- air box didn't get water in it) but I immediately threw it in reverse and was fine. No more fording through anything other than a big mud puddle for me now! My consolations to you though. I hope it turns out for the best. Keep us posted!

Well, you can put a 7MGTE in a 2nd gen, and you can put a 3rd gen 3.4 in a 2nd gen, so you can probably put a 7MGTE in a 3rd gen...I think?

Good luck!

As long as you didn't get any water in the engine your fine...I would however be draining both diffs, the transfer case, power steering, tranny and do a oil change to be safe. I've been there done that in my old s10..actually completely waterlogged the engine, but after all efforts, it was back on the road with just a bunch of fluid changed!

FYI~ Your going to need to flush the power steering and trans not just change it.

I see no need to total, my s10 was in WAAAAYYY deeper water and it was perfectly fine afterwards and still drives today! BTW- I did basically the same thing, took a line I took 4234524552 times before, but that time was the first after winter (when I lived in WA) and apperantly a big truck with matching BIG tires got stuck over the winter and made one big mofo'n hole.

Good luck!
