I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about the possibility of getting my front and rear stock bumpers coated with Line-X. Well, I decided to do it and finally have them back on. In the mean time I also completely detailed and fixed my rig. I've been driving a work van for the past 2 1/2 weeks while I've been working on this but it's finally done!! Below is a list and cost of what I did:

1. Removed color keyed front and rear bumpers and had them Line X Coated - Memorial day weekend wrecked the last of the OEM paint - ($60.00)
2. Removed all SR5 Fender flares - "forever blacked" them and installed the tacoma "body pads" between the flares and the body. - ($63.75)
3. Bought a porter cable orbital sander and clayed, polished, glazed, and then hand waxed the whole rig - Tree scratches from hell memorial day weekend ($160.00)
4. Steam Cleaned the carpet, floor mats, seats and headliner. - got mud and sand everywhere memorial day weekend. ($20.00 for cleaner)
5. Installed new front bug guard - broke old one memorial day weekend. ($65.00)
6. Had an alignment done - Knocked it out memorial day weekend. ($65.00)
7. Oil change - ($20.00)
8. New drivers side right wheel replaced - Bent it on memorial day weekend - (free! - discount tire warrantied it!!!)

If I added right this all comes to $453.75. Damn, more than I thought, but my rig is as good as new!

Looks good! I might try this on my 2nd gen..if the Line-X is that affordable

Will the line-x chip off on the bumper since it is somewhat flexible?

 

I don't think it will chip off. Actually, i think the flexibility may help it absorb some of the rocks that would chip just paint. I guess I'll find out soon enoufgh though. ......

 

How much did it cost ya?

P.S. How thick did they do it?

 

I worked with a guy at line x who works alone on saturdays and was willing to do it on the side for around 50 bucks. Ended up costing me 60 cash but considering rhino lining quoted me 300 I was still happy. As far as the thickness, the guy said that he was going to coat it to about 35-40 mil thickness. For a reference point, he said he sprayed the bedliners in to about 120-130 mils. Even with the thinner coating though, I still had to press and trim a little to get all my mounting holes to line back up during re-assembly..

Well now we need to hear the story of Memorial Day weekend. It took me all week to get my truck back to normal after that weekend...

 

Took me almost 3 weeks. Went up to Kettle Falls area on Lake Rosevelt. Did alot of wakeboarding, wheeling and of course ..... First time up there and I loved it.... Planning a return trip already.

 

What kind of steam cleaner did you buy? gotta a link to it?

 

I just used a hoover household upright carpet cleaner. I actually used the upholstry/stair cleaner tube-attachment thing with hot water in the tank. I got mine at costco a few years ago for like $200. It took a few passes to get everything out of my truck but it ended up working great..

Nice looking rig Greedy. I like the way the back bumper looks but I'm not so sure about the front. Might look better if the valance was a bit darker. IMHO

I think the bumpers look fantastic! My only question is, how will you keep the front one free of bug splatters and the like? Seems like that stuff would be a bear to get out of the rough Line-X surface. Also, will the material experience fade over time?

Thanks for the compliments guys. About the bug splatters... I actually noticed the first time I drove it that the bugs did get wedged in there pretty good. Some soapy water and a cleaning brush got them out fine though. The Line x is very durable and can take alot of scrubbing/abrasion.

 

I would have to agree with you, When you first mentioned it I thought that it wouldn't look so good.

They look awesome, Brings your rig to a new level.

I might have to do the same on my '90, hope you don't mind!

 

Looks better than I thought it would and I wouldn't mind doing it too but I can't give up the chrome yet. Keep us up to date on it's durability.
