Lights won't turn off - 2k 4-runner

For some time now, my wife's 2000 4runner has been going through this phase where it randomly leaves the low beam head lights on after she leaves the car and after she manually turns them off. Needless to say, I thought it was a daytime driving lights issue and did the little #2 wire cut job to disable them. However, that didn't seem to fix it. They will even come on all by themselves after you have left the car - randomly. If this is not a simply fix, I've contimplated rewiring the headlights to a classic on off switch. Any ideas out there? Thanks!

Sounds like the headlight switch/controller itself has gone bad.
A 2000 sounds too new to start doing hack jobs on the wiring. Have you checked for TSBs to see if maybe there is/was a recall for this?

Hope the fix is easy. I don't suppose you could point me in the direction of the TSBs? Thanks!

Most likely it's the stalk switch. If your 4Runner is still under warranty, dealer will replace it for free. If not, I believe the switch is $60-$70.

On the side note, I have brand new headlights switch from my '01 4Runner for sale. That's the one for SR5 with no fogs on it. Let me know if you're interested.

Look on the Community page, then scroll down to the very bottom and click on YotaTech on the web.

On that page you will see a link to the TSBs near the very bottom.

has anything else been acting up? One time, water leaked onto my fuses and shorted out a bunch of crap. The lights would come on all by themselves and the alarm would also go off on its' own.

Bringing this thread back from the dead because the headlights on my '99 (non-DRL) 4Runner have been doing the same thing. The first time it happened was in October 2005 (I remember because the wife and I were on our honeymoon). The second time was a few weeks ago. I've had to pull the HL relay and leave it unplugged overnight both times in order to get them to shut off. Granted, two times in two years isn't bad but, since my wife is using the 4Runner to cart our son around these days, I'd hate for them to be left stranded by a dead battery. Then again, I'd hate to buy a 70$ switch and not have it fix the problem. So, anyone have any additional info or ideas on this? I couldn't find any TSBs regarding this issue.
