lighting gurus need help with burtman industries sills

so i just ordered some of these bad boys (along with a new steering wheel cover and waiting on the carbon fiber door pillars) and i am looking for a way to make the 4runner cut out glow when the doors are opened like in a benz. if anyone has any ideas on how to do this it would be great. i was thinking of raising them up a tiny bit and putting like a low profile srip of lights/leds around the logo and then hooking them up to the door open/close light. lets here your guys ideas
thanks

You could also run some fiber under it and have a color wheel to make it what ever color you wanted. Search the web I'm sure you could find something that would work.

i noticed that how you described it, the letters are cut out. On the sills, the letters are actually sandblasted in the stainless steel, so raising the sill and putting leds under it would only light the outer edges of the entire piece

ohh so they are not cut all the way through? darm that would have looked killer. maby like the guy above said just light up underneath them so the outter edges glow and maby if its thin enough the 4runner light up

I dont think the steel would let light through, and if it is thin enough to let light through the metal, then they wont last long at all.

jason, this would be a great idea for another "generation" of door sills, it would be more involved though to put leds on it, and clear plastic to fill in the logo and lines.

I already tried to do it. Not at this time. $$$$$$

As always, 4Runner owners have great ideas.

Can you run a thin layer of plexiglas under it and light the end of it? After cutting out the letters of course.

You probably could. The bottom of the sill is notched out in it's stock form -- meaning, you could lay something thin under it and it would fit. but you would need to CUT the letters out.

If you had a few hours to kill one afternoon, and had a dremel or rotary tool handy, use a very small cut off wheel to trim the insides of the letters out. It would take alot of time, but you could end up with the results that you are looking for.
