hello guys, here i'm am again. I have a question about my 98 4runner. When i bought my truck, the dealer did mentioned that it did have the keyless entry system, and i dont have the darn remote! Also i remember my dealer saying that he would be glad to give me a new remote and program it for me at 120$ i'm like WTF. Hell no fricken way! So here's my question.

1. Could i just buy a remote off ebay and program it myself?
2. Where could i find the keyless entry device in my truck, to ensure that i do have it.

PS: i finally took off the running board it was pretty easy except the fact that the bolts was a pain in the ass (rusted)! Now i dont have to worry about my legs getting dirty!! will post pics in the morning when sun comes up.

i have a 1998 limted 4runner, in case yall need to know.

 

I also have a 98 (mine is an SR5) and bought a replacement remote off ebay for around $20-25 if I remember correctly. It was very easy to program and works like a charm!

There are two places to look to confirm you have an alarm. First would be on the front of the center console or left dash near the steering wheel for the status LED. The second would be the actual alarm brain itself. I found the alarm brain under the drivers seat tucked under the carpet. You will need to find the brain to program it.

I ran into a similar problem with my 2000. You may not have the status led on the dash or the alarm box under the seat and still have remote entry. I talked to my local Yota dealer and gave them my vin #. They printed a sheet out with all the option that mine came with. The remote entry was on there but no alarm. The key fobs are different for both the alarm and the one's without. Once you know that you have remote entry, the dealer can sell you one or just write down the FCC number for the remote and order one of the internet for a fraction of the dealer cost. I got some from a forum member. The programming is easy. The FCC id for a 2000 without alarm or engine disable is HYQ1512Y. Another method is to try to program a remote to your ECM and if your truck responds than you have remote entry ( no physical remote required).

Go up to step five if the locks cycle than you have remote entry, when in doubt repaet, it took me several times to get mine into programming mode.

Here are the instructions on how to get the truck into programming mode:

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast. (~1sec per cycle)

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

I hope this helps, also look into the FSM since there are several different programming situations to include adding new remotes and removing remotes.

flying, thanks for the instructions. So does it apply for my 98 eventhough it worked for a 2000? also how'd i get around to finding the FCC ID for the remote without going to the dealer? Honestly, i'm not quite happy with the dealer and i would like to avoid contacts much as possible.

 

If you have the RS3000 (dealer installed option, box under drive rseat) than you would use FCC ID: BAB237131-022.
That remote programs differently by pushing a button on the box. If you get one of the web it will come with instructions.
As for the year difference it doesn't matter, the individual years and updates were minor.
Also try the search function here and on 4runner.org.

 

okay look, i checked under my seat, i didnt see anything under there. no signs of boxes, just a small device for the power seats. Also, i did look underneath the dash - right above the pedals... i didnt find anything that would appear to be an device for the keyless entry...

So, that means i dont have the device?

 

I means that you do not have the RS3000 system ( alarm), look inside the rear door ( hatch) there should be another orange colored ECM. That ECM has a FCC id as well. Or just try to get the truck into programming mode for the new remotes. If the locks cycle by them self then you have keyless entry.

 

so would a 00 4runner remote work on a 98 4runner i want the rear window roll down option

 

The FCC id is the same, therefore the window should roll down but not up. A really nice feature!!
Some camrys use the same remote only difference is that the remote has picture of the trunk on it instead of the window.

 

Anyone know what kind of battery my 2-button keyless entry remote takes? (97 4runner look at sig)

Took the battery out to replace it a long time ago, never did and then lost the battery.

hmm it'd be nice if the 00 remote works on the 98.

Take the cover of the back hatch, there is a ECU ( the ECU is orange) inside the door, mine was in the lower drivers side.

I have 98 t-100. Does this entry systme also apply there?

 

According to the doc linked below, the '98 T100 did not have the factory option of keyless entry without the alarm, only the same dealer installed RS3000 with the alarm and keyless entry together. So you should look for the box or the status LED. If neither exists, I would assume you don't have it.
