k&n air filters

has anyone here installed a K&N air filter to their 4runner? is there a significant difference in performance/horsepower/mileage? i'd like to know before i spend $60 on it.

I found a good discussion on them.

Air Filter topic

There is some debate over wether or not the filter well enough. Some think they let in too much dirt.

I have and nope. No difference that you can tell. There is really no way to "feel" an increase in performance with just an airfilter.

BTW, I had my service engine light come on, and took it in. They said it was my MAF that was probably dirty from the oil from my K&N...

Just do the deckplate mod!

I put in a K&N filter and noticed the difference. Search around on this site for similar threads, but both the K&N and amsoil filter have been dynoed by some Tacoma people, and there is a measureable increase in HP, with the K&N producing better results than the Amsoil. There is data that suggests that the Amsoil does a better job at filtering, but if you're changing your oil at recommended intervals this may not be an issue. So, for performance increase, I went with both K&N and Deckplate mod (went with filter first, then did deckplate later).

I have the 3vze (3.slow v6). When I had my stock intake I grabbed the KN drop in replacement. No real seat of the pants feel, however I DID gain about 2mpg at highway cruising. Also, wide open top end speed increased by about 2-3mph. Definately worth it, just keep the air filter clean by cleaning it every oil change.

I have the FIPK now and it helps a little bit on the power (0.5sec faster in the 0-60 with better off the line torque), I cant comment on my MPG right now cuz my O2 sensor is bad or my Cat needs replacing...and the sound OMG, it sounds like I have an exhuast now!

I put a K&N cone filter (FIPK type) on my 94 xtra cab. I got a noticiable boost in of the line torque (get up and go) and I went from a 14.5 mpg avrg. to 17.5 mpg avrg. it also seems more driveable now. As to washing/recharging the filter every oil change unless you live in the desert don't do it!...That thin build-up of dirt actually helps it to work...I work in construction and so get a fairly hefty load of dirt exposure I've found once a year (in the fall as part of winter prep.) is more than enough. i've put the K&N's on the last three vehicles i've owned they pay for themselves in a year with fuel savings...just make sure you put that sticker on (especially with a factory drop in type) I've had those no-nothings at ath rapid lube try to toss them on me...
What can I say I swear by them!

I use the K&N drop in and with the open front air box, seemed to have helped my 2.7 on the low end. No big gas mileage gains. I just cleaned/oiled the filter...said every 50K is good... I just hit over 100K so I was about due for a cleaning. Everything looked clean and dry in the intake.

Ditto!

I have had them on 4 vehicles including the Runner which has the FIPK. It's a little noisy, but that's the charm of it. As if there were a caged animal under the hood...

Has anyone installed the Downey version of the FIPK? The picture in the catalog show's a filter that is larger than the FIPK.

Question: When you guys are talking about removing the EFI fuse after the deck plate installation, #1- What does that do?, #2. Do you leave the fuse out or do you pull the fuse while the vehicle is runing? Could you guys please enlite me a little because this sounds like something I want to do. One more thing, does this deck plate installation cause your engine to burn more gas??? Thanks dudes!!

not much in the way of a defference, the good thing about them is they are cleanable and reusable, all you need is the oil to put on it after cleaning it,

use formula 409 cleaner to clean it, they(k&n) sell cleaner, but why spend the money, 409 is the same thing
k&n representitives are going to hunt me down for that comment

One thing to keep in mind is that these aftermarket performance air filters that are talked about exist because they're free-flow filters; i.e., they let more air flow through them while still trapping the stuff that you don't want in your engine. But, if the engine is already air-starved, or if there's no way to present more air to the filter, then you won't notice anything.

That's why a lot of folks notice performance kicks when they do the deckplate/airbox and/or elbow mod *and* replace the stock filter with a K&N drop-in or Amsoil. Opening up the airbox (and/or removing the elbow) will allow more ait into the air box, which will be able to pass through to the engine more freely because of the filter.

And yeah, I know that I'm talking about the K&N drop-in, not the K&N cone which of course does away with the stock air box.

After having the FIPK in I can tell at highway speeds it's there. BIG difference. Mainly if you set the cruise at 80 or so, when you go up the hills, my yota doesnt have to drop into the passing gear. Also my top end increased by about 2mph....

I also think that it helped my gas milage significantly, but my O2 sensor is bad, so I cant comment just yet.
