Check the frame for rust. That's about it on that 98. Check the fluids of course.. That's about all I got.

There aren't really too many gremlins on the tacos. The 3.4 is a good solid motor (mine's got 200K+ and runs great still and lots of others on here have more miles than that). You may ask when the clutch was replaced. The timing belt/water pump should be done every 90K so I would ask him if and when that was done too. I'm not sure if the taco rear axles are prone to leaks like the 4runners' are (axle seals typically only last ~100K). Is it 4x4? What's the Subi that you might be trading for it?

I would do it if the truck drives good. You'll have more fun in the taco! Let us know how it goes. I think time will tell that the 3.4 is as reliable as the 22R, but with a lot more power.

Yeah the guy lives in tn and I'm in charlotte so we'd be meeting each other at a mid point. And I'm not the kinda guy who makes a drive and come back empty handed. My buddy had the exact same yr and truck and said he loved his. I've been wanting a tow rig/dd and this just kinda landed in my lap. Could this thing flat tow my 4runner to wheeling expos? I have pics but I can't upload cause I use my phone to get on here and for some reason it won't let me upload

It would tow your 4runner, but not very fast (like MaK92-4RnR said a S/C would be better). If you live in a hilly or mtn area, it might be a pain. The 3.4 isn't a great towing motor, but for a V6 it's not the worst. If the diffs are regeared for those 33s, it will do a lot better for towing and normal driving too.

Towing a heavy trailer w/ 4.11s and 33s would get on my nerves quick. Hell just running 33s was enough for me to get 4.88s.

Yeah I'm about to get 4.88s on my 4runner that 22re barely pushes it up the hills around here. 33's on 4.11s will bog the 3.4 that bad?

It's not horrible, still a lot better than a 22RE (even w/ 4.88s), but I kept my 4runner stock for the first few years and I got used to the power it had. When I got my lift and went to 33s, it felt like a dog in comparison to before.

Im not sure what your wrx would go for but the taco could go for 7-9k around raleigh and that is stock. The bfgs locker and bumpers sweeten the deal for sure.

I'd get the taco but to be sure it is NOT a tow rig, by any stretch. It will move your 4runner around where you need it but you'll be disappointed if you are expecting it to perform like a half ton full size truck.

They are excellent daily drivers though and you can take them anywhere!

Yeah I was really lookin at diesels and this kinda got pitched at me so I'm just tryin to weigh the pros and cons. I could always get the taco then flip it and buy a diesel
