If anyone is interested in spending a little $$ then these guys are the ones to build a custom gas can/ spare tire carrier. They may have possibly already done a 4 runner bumper :

They do great stuff and will custom fabricate any type of bumper for you.
Tehy have a pretty cool way to hold down the cans also:
If anything it might give you a few tips:

Yeah that does suck, But it wasn't on the highway that's why i got a ticket. I was doing Highway speeds on a county road.

Would someone be able to make something like this:

Then you could fabricate a tray to slide in there which would hold a couple of cans.

It seems like a sweet idea for those of us with tire carriers.

Worst part when putting cans on the back is the added weight to the already heavy load of tools, full size spare, and fuel cans full of fuel. Mine is sagging just from my two tool boxes and 35. I cant inmagine a jerry can these days without getting a coil spacer for more lift.

You have a roof basket, chuck the tools up there in a locking box and chain them down. I keep a few of my tools up there all the time.

I also keep the 40L of gas up there when I need it, but it would be nice to have it in a spot that's easier to lift on and off. I'm going to kill myself one day from keeping it on the basket.

I do but I also have a lot of added heighth making me top heavy as it is. If I start putting stuff up top I will have to watch where I go (off camber situations).

You need a winch to balance it out...

What would folks be willing to pay for something like that?

I think it would be a very handy storage unit, I'd be willing to pay cost + shipping + whatever reasonable profit whomever makes it wants.

Would be a great spot to strap down recovery gear, muddy boots, etc.

This is one of my favorite Jerry Can Holders for the far superior Wedco style cans.

Another nice one from Hannibal

I picked up 2 of these from my local Pep Boys for $8.50 each

EDIT:
I'll be sure to look for some cheap ratcheting straps or maybe just some hooks to use in lieu of strap/bracket contact.

Peter,
Do you have the Wedco (Cheaper than Dirt/NATO) style of cans? If so, I don't think the one pictured (made for the Blitz Cans) will fit. The Blitz cans are a touch smaller in depth.

The NATO style cans are just a touch bigger. I checked it out today - the can got a bit wedged but a good yank would free it. For $17 I ain't complainin'
