You guys with the idle vibration and A/T's, I know some said it goes away when in neutral, but does it go away if you double foot it (one foot on the brake and one foot giving the engine some gas to get the RPM's up)?

Re: Idle

I have come across similar problems on a few trucks and 4runners..it is usually the throttle body which causes this. There is no idle adjustment and any carbon deposits can cause rough idleing or hard starting...I found a thread here which shows you how to clean the throttle body..hope it helps you.

It feels different when you double foot it but I think it is still there. I may have to plan on doing the throttle body first just to see if that is it.

I would follow the thread above and at least clean the throttle body very well with carb cleaner. Then if the problem persists you can eliminate that from the list of possibilites.

How about a loose heat shield??

Following an oil change I had a vibration issue at low RPMs, well more like a rattle coming from the engine compartment. Turns out to be a loose heat shield. Might be worth a look. If you have a rubber malet, give your skids and heat shields a good hit and see if they're loose.

I've cleaned the throttle body and still no luck. The vibe is still there. You feel it throughout the entire truck.

As far as the other sound goes that sounds like something is rattling, I think it's something to do w/ my 1st gen roll bar. Might be the zipper on the pad rubbing the metal bar. Only problem is, the vibe only arises in "drive" mode. Guess I'll need to get my wife to sit in the driver's seat, put it in Drive and I'll sit in the cargo area and check out the roll bar for the noise.

My vibe is in a '96 Runner 3.4 w/auto & TRD 'charger. Same vibe, noticeable @ a stop in Drive, rpm's @600. Slip it in to Neutral, rpm's go up to 800 and vibe goes away. I'm going to check the tranny mount this week, as I have ocassionally felt movment in the shifter under moderate to heavy acceleration. I'll let you know what I find.
Please do. Sounds like we have the same problem...and I don't even have a s.c.

Thanks

No luck on the throttle body cleaning either except that it motivated me to complete the installation of the Addco Sway Bars and do my Tranny fluid drain and fill.

I am going to read up on my symptoms and plan my timing belt change.

I have the same issue, vibration like a slight misfire at idle ONLY when in D or reverse and stopped. Changed plugs, new NGK wires, cleaned MAFS, cleaned air filter, changed vacuum lines, oil and filter, new PCV. Still there. So I will clean the TB and IACV, but the only other thing I can think of is a bad engine mount or stretched timing chain(?)-my Taco has 108k miles. I plan to also change the fuel filter this weekend. Someday I will discover the root cause. Anyone out there had any luck??

You guessed right!

I was able to trace the noise to the rear of the vehicle. Since I can only hear the vibration while in Drive and Reverse, I had to get someone to sit in the vehicle while I inspected the rear of it. I got my wife to sit in the driver's seat, and w/ the brake depressed, put it in Drive. I walked around back and discovered the problem. Here's what I found:

Near the tailpipe, there is a rubber bushing that joins the pipe to the frame of the vehilce allowing the pipe to give under normal operation. When the vehicle is in Drive, and the engine has had time to warmed up, it sends a vibration through this rubber bushing onto the frame which in turn causes my trailer hitch to vibrate. When I apply pressure to this rubber bushing, the vibration stops!

I recently replaced my '02 OEM trailer hitch with my wife's '00 OEM hitch and apparently did not tighten everything up like I should have. I stole hers to put on mine b/c one, it's lighter weight and two, it has a higher receiver point to help w/ ground clearance.

I'm glad that's one mystery I've finally solved!

wow. I will check that out but mine comes from the engine itself and I see the engine vibrate in D or R...so I think it is engine related, closest thing to a suspension issue might be a tranny or engine mount IMO.

My 1995 Taco 2.4L has the same issue. I have a thread related to this. Search "vibration while stopped in Drive". It should come up. I have tried everything from cleaning the TB to checking mounts to double footing to ... The one new thing I've noticed is that when I kick on the AC it goes away. The extra load increases the RPMs which makes me think IACV. Now I just need to check the resistance values for this. It is a pricey replacement at around $230 I think. I heard a rumor that it is possible to adjust these things. True? Check out the aforementioned thread and see if it helps or maybe opens a new door to try.
