Personally in Snow or Sand I don't think 4WD makes a ton of difference. In the UK (where we don't do much snow but when we do it sure makes a joke of the roads) I've passed 4WDs stuck in snow drifts when I've been driving a stock Front Wheel Drive Ford repmobile.

I think it all depends on how you drive it, If you keep the speed up, don't brake too sharp and keep the wheels spinning (that way you don't get caught out by sudden loss of traction) then I think a 2WD is going to go anywhere that a 4WD is going to go.

In Mud I think 4WD is definately the way to go especially when you are crawling along, but without lockers you are always going to end up with a problem if you go cross axle. Also Rock Crawling is a 4WD game unless you have a seriously big tyres so you always keep both wheels on the ground.

I used to go off road in the sand a lot when I lived in the UAE, I had a Cherokee 4Litre Auto and it never went in 4WD. Speed is the essence (and low pressure on the tyres).

I'd rather a 2WD Runner than no Runner, still going to have more fun than the average, and it will still last longer than a lot of the SUVs out there.

Cheers

2wd + locker + snow = donuts

But that's just a yankee's point of view. I wouldn't mind a 2wd 4Runner if I lived down south. I would prefer 4wd but at least I'd have a 4Runner.

BTW, Option 6 sounds about right
Yeah, we don't really have any problems with tall snow drifts here in Birmingham. But since we don't have paved roads in the south, we just make due.....2WD or 4WD is still better than having the horse into town......

I agree that the driver makes all the difference, but when driving in the snow with rear wheel drive, you are much more likely to hit the gas too hard and go into a spin. If you are an idiot of course. I consider 90% of all drivers around here to be idiots. Make that 95%. It's fun to see how many 4x4's wipe out in snow storms. Those clueless b@sterds! Take it easy for christ's sake.
But me, I drive silly, I'll tell ya (jerky boys)

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I always drive in snow with my foot hard on the gas. If you keep the wheels spinning you still get traction (once you are moving) and there is less chance of going into a spin because of over ambitious use of the loud pedal. It's the transition from not spinning to spinning that gets you every time. Watch any rally driver from Finland on the snow, the wheels are never going the same speed as the road is going past, they are always heavy on the right pedal and very light on the brakes.

It's true what you say though, it's all the other clueless b@stards that cause the problems. Especially those in big SUVs and Volvos who think they are totally invulnerable.

Cheers

consider it from a business perspective. toyota has a MUCH wider target market offering 2wd 4runners as well as 4wd. joe carbuyer doesn't need 4wd. joe wheeler does. obviously there's a lot more of the former.

so if you have a 4wd, that's awesome, you better use it as god intended, and props to you if you take it to the limit. if you have a 2wd that's fine. and if you have a 2wd, and despite how you ended up with it, if you want to wheel it, then make do with what you have at the moment and just have fun! and big props to those who have, in the face of people like forerunner. live and let live. we're all 4runners.

I think nearly everyone will agree that a 4WD is more desirable than a 2WD, yes?

Of all the annoying and idiotic things to talk about. Okay, you have a 4WD, you're cool. Whoopdeedoo.
If that makes you feel somewhat better about yourself than all the more power to you buddy.

Okay, I need to sleep. 24 hours straight of working with one 3 hour break... *groan*

Lord knows we get our share of mindless posts.

Exhibit A: ""

Exhibit B: ""

Exhibit C: ""

And with that, I rest my case...

I also choose #6 by the way...
