Nope. You are still spinning the CVs and axles and parts of the diff, in addition to lugging around a ton of extra weight...

No problem Tom. Just making sure there is an appropriate choice to represent everyone's feelings on the matter.

that was my Dad's logic also back when he was looking for a larger vehicle than his current Honda Accord. he had no need for 4WD, and since he used to commute to San Diego everyday for work from Irvine (approx. 80 miles), the 2WD 4 banger was a good choice.
now that the runner is mine, i may wish it were 4x4, but what am i going to do about it now? not much, but everything i have done to increase its trail performance has been 100% worth while in my opinion. so if you want to call my 4runner a 2Runner, thats fine, but at least its a TRUE 2Runner. a stock 4x4, could also be considered a 2runner if it has no lockers.
this thread just kinda seems to try and make those with 2WD feel crappy.

thus, option 6 is what i choose

The only off-roading I do out here in so cal is in the open desert. When you're doing 70+ mph, it really doesn't matter whether or not you have 4wd. Most of the SCORE trucks that run the off-road desert races are 2wd. Some are 4wd, but that's just more parts to break.

Thumbs up

this thread just kinda seems to try and make those with 2WD feel crappy.
Whoa!!!!!!

You can lift it.
You can upgrade the shocks.
you can upgrade the tires.
you can do the ISR mod.
you can put a locker on it.
you can upgrade the stereo

You Hard Core 4WD'rs may call it an "Oxymoron" or even a "Moral Contradiction" but You know what ......

A 2WD Runner is a Runner and a Potential Modders"Money Sink" just like the 4WD Runner....LOL

And it's still a better vehicle than most other brand's 4WDs are - On or Off-Road.

It's a Runner so who cares...

done all that except the ISR, the 2.7 is kinda hard to do it.
I wouldnt take back one of those mods i have done

good call on the "money sink"
and it sure is a much better vehicle than some other 4WDs out there!

And going up a steep hill? I hope they have a SC...cause you are gonna have to rap that thing out around 3600 to get going.

Flame on people, but a 2WD w/locker aint gonna touch a 4WD without.

(No offense Peter!)

Bwahahahahahah!
Well, s'okay. I think I like the sand more than the rocks anyway

As far as my choice -
#6 all the way.

My truck is 2WD and I take as much pride in the work I personally do on it as much as any of you fellas with the 4WD.

I'll stick with calling my 2WD a "4Runner"......

Actually, I think I will just call it mine which ever it might be.

I wasn't even paying attention to that........If he isn't a golf player, that is really sad........but funny.

I saw Scott yesterday out at the track. We talked about you for a little bit......all good of course.

I am going to see what dirt he has on you......

I am not sure if I am going to make it to the wedding. We are supposed to take my mother to New Orleans that weekend.

If you change your mind and come out to the race this weekend, get my number from Scott. We will be staying in the Paddock are behind the garages and will have plenty of food and .........refreshments.

In 2 Hi you are not spinning the front drive shaft, CV axles or the front diff. That would only happen if you locked in the manual hubs (if so equipped) and drove in 2 Hi. There is, however the added weight (not a ton, but considerable amount).

I say 6 too.

Throw a locker in the back and it'll keep up with your 4WD. You know it will. I'm not biased. I drive a 4WD truck.

3rd gens do not have manual hubs unless you buy the kit. They have ADD, and yes the front does spin when disconnected.

Throw some snow on the ground and that's what makes the difference.

2wd + locker + snow = donuts

But that's just a yankee's point of view. I wouldn't mind a 2wd 4Runner if I lived down south. I would prefer 4wd but at least I'd have a 4Runner.

BTW, Option 6 sounds about right
