Hey all-
Last night I was bored so I wrapped my intake tube with header wrap and Thermo-Tec heat shield. It looks pretty cool (pics to come).
With the headers now wrapped and the intake wrapped, how significant of a decrease in intake air temperature do you think I can expect?
Also, do you think this will give me more power?

I expect it will be most beneficial when off-road. The underhood temps soar on those long uphill climbs.

 

As far as I know, header wrap actually retains heat. So you may have done more harm than good on your intake.

You would have to do some temperature montoring to check this theory.

On my 95SI, I wrapped the header and SAW the temp difference on the temp gauge. So I know that works.

 

After I wrapped it with header wrap, I wrapped it again with Thermo-Tec heat shield. That's supposed to reflect heat.
Hopefully it works

 

You may just want to try the reflective tape without the header wrap on the intake.

But again, testing would be necessary. Try it! Get a temperature probe and see what you come up with. I would be very interested to know!

 

Thermo-Tec actually has a new product that I used to wrap my intake. It's called Air Intake Wrap. It comes in a 3 foot section and it can wrap anything from 2.5"-4" in diameter. I wrapped mine with Thermo Flex and then the Air intake Wrap. My intake will be cold as hell compared to the engine compartment. Do I think it will make a difference? Yes, to varying degrees. If your intake tubing is 14 guage metal, then a big difference. But, if your tubing is PVC like mine, probably not as much of a difference.

I wrapped the intake of my S2000 and totally eliminated the bog in hot weather that I was experiencng priot to wrapping it. I even wrapped my AEM CAI after I got it. I know it works on a motor like the F20, but I don't really notice any bog or lack of power in the 4Runner during a hot day.
