Installing Tow Hitch / trailer hitch

ok so I did search and didn't really find what I was looking for on this site or Google.

I have a 97 4Runner SR4 4x4 my neighbor gave me a Tow Hitch / Trailer Hitch I am using both terms for ease of others searching he said it came off a Toyota and was given to him, but did not fit his F-150. it did not come with any hard ware and is a U-Haul Brand. I have never installed a hitch or even really looked at how one was mounted. the neighbor said it just bolts onto the bottom of my frame is this correct?

can I use grade 8 hardware for the nuts/bolts?
does the hitch bolt to the bottom of the frame?

can some one post pics of how they have their hitches mounted?

I've got about 5 threads showing on the bolts I used for my Draw Tite hitch. Hope this helps. I can get some better pictures of the hitch if you need them. It should bolt up right around the spare tire with no clearance problems between the hitch and the spare.

thanks for the pic, I got my stock tow hooks removed and attempted to bolt up the hitch until I found out it was NOT for a 4runner. the Hitch was wider than my frame was and only the first 2 holes lined up. the 3 and 4th holes I would have had to drill my frame.

Size of bolts to attach Toe Hitch?

Hello,

I purchased a used toe hitch for my 97 4Runner and the 4Runner does not have any existing bolts attached to the frame. Does anyone know the size, it would be nice to know prior to heading to the hardware store.

Thanks,

Andrew

If you are using the nuts welded into the frame, be aware they are a weird fine pitch, .25 narrower than what you find in hardware/auto stores. I had a hard time finding one about two years ago when I messed one up taking off the hitch to paint it. The trailer guy (who is next to the Toyota dealer in my town) looked in his scrap box and came up with one and gave it to me. The dealer would have had to order it for a serious price. I'm sorry, I don't remember the size.

For under $200, you can have a Drawtight or Hidden Hitch. I assume the come with hardware but do not know that for sure. Other than that...mount that one yourself...

*BUMP*

well it finally got around to getting a hitch for my 4runner. craigslist score. I have the 8 bolts, but I found I am laking the special piece for 2 bolts closest to the center of the truck.
see photo here

that is from a Curt manf trailer hitch, anyone know where I can buy just those two pieces or what the correct term for them is?
