Damn! Tried it last night and it worked like a charm. I stand corrected....

 

I did this. My diversity antenna is also not being used. I tried to solder it to the antenna, but it didn't work.

The RS3000 antenna is located under the dashboard (take the panel off) and its a solid gray wire that isn't connected to anything on one end.. It will be located by somewhere under the steering wheel. Does that make sense? :pat:

 

I am 99% sure that you will not have to reporgram it if you change the battery. I have never seen a remote that has needed to be re-programed after a battery change (OEM and aftermarket)

 

You're right. Reprogramming simply authorizes the remote to work with the alarm unit. Replacing the batteries in the transmitter won't affect the unique identifier that the alarm unit is looking for.

 

That doesn't seem like the optimum location to get a good signal.

 

Thanks for the replies guys. I think it may be time for a new battery because mine doesn't always unlock/lock when I push the button.

 

Its not. Bob_98SR5 tried extending the wire up to the windsheld and it didn't work either. I am thinking that the alarm wire doesn't have enough power to make any use of a longer wire. Or something like that anyways.

 

improving range.. buy a new setup

 

Instead of a battery, why not just get a new 4runner? I have opened my 03 from 1500 feet away.

Okay, I just tried putting the remote to my ass...and oh man it felt good! (j/k)

It actually increased my range from 8 feet to about 30. Unbelievable.

Radio Shack, Walgreens, RiteAid, Kmart, Walmart...any of those should have your battery. Pop open the back, and stick in a new battery.

Here's proof that the "hold it to your chin" method uses your brain as a transmitter. My F150 remote is good a for a block at least, and my girlfriend's is only good for like 30 feet. I held her remote to my chin and it worked about 100 feet away. She tried it and it didn't work. Did I mention she's blonde?....

 

I think the antenna in the transmitter has to be a specific length, ie length in proportion to the frequency or something, one of the electrical engineers should chime in here. I remember from R/C car days even 1/2" removed from the reciever wire would dramatically reduce the range. the link to the chin trick was good, but strange, isn't the transmitter in your hand already? I think messing with the transmitter would be scary. mechanics=no problem, electrics=evil.
Speaking of alarms my 95 has an alarm, installed by the stealer, but it only locks the doors, the unlock function does not work, there are some wires that hang down under the dash that go to the alarm, but I am a little scared to mess with them until I know a little more. I was told most of the alarms of that era are not factory toyota, but installed by a third party;however, the third party alarm was all the same mfr. not sure?? If they are all similar does anyone have a wiring diagram?

 

I've installed maybe a hundred alarms over the years, an no, different brands can be radically different...

Probably just one wire loose though, bummer.

 

yeah I might as well just use the stupid key by the time mine works....
