Idle spped issue

My 81 22R will idle high when it is cold, but it will idle high for far too long. I removed the air cleaner while it was idling so high and tried to open the choke places and or unstick anything that seemed stuck but it continued to idle high for a maddening length of time and I found no moving part that changed the idle....Eventually a swift pump of the accellerator slowed the idle back down but it took way too long and the engine was way warmer than it needed to be. I read in a manual at the library that there is no possible idle adjustment in the 81 model. Is there a simple choke adjustment that will fix this problem?

Sounds like the choke needs to be replaced.
An electronic choke is inexpensive and will
resolve the issue of high idle too long.

EDIT:

There is a kick down circuit that is linked to the throttle cable cam.

The cam has a screw that can be moved back and forth to adjust idle.

Follow the throttle cable into the carb and you will see the cam, the kick down circuit, and idle adjustment screw.

Check the voltage meter on the idle control sensor, and don't forget to check the main computer for any error codes. I had the same problem and I found that the sensor was bad; probably cost me 150 bones but will fix the idleing.

Maverick the 81 22R is a non-computerized carberator setup.
No throtle sensor either.

Here's the deal.....I can't get the choke replaced without buying a $50 carb rebuild kit. So is ther any cheaper fix to this problem which is at worst annoying?

If the choke is a mechanical type then it will be necessary to by the rebuild kit. However, there is always the junk yard .

I might same the same for electronic chokes. Try some carberator cleaner.

Not 100% sure yet but I found a linkage on the choke side that was unhooked and since I recconnected it there has been no further problem so far.
