I suspect I have a failing seal around the input shaft "carrier" in the t-case. I thought the source of my leak was the t-case shifter gaskets, but that is proving to most like not be the issue.

Oh - I'm getting one or two drips of gear oil after driving my '99 4x4 (multi-mode)...right at the seam where the t-case meets the transmission.

I may try this myself, if it isn't terribly difficult.

Remove cross member to the rear of the t-case, remove rear drive shaft, remove front drive shaft, unhook wires connected to t-case.

Un hook, transmission shifter linkage, remove trans mission shifer, t-case shifter, and related unit, take off t-case shifter, remove the 12 or so bolts holding the the t-case to the tranny, youll need a few joints and extensions for the top two.

When the bolts are removed, i gave mine a few good kicks and it came loose, then the easiest way to get it off is to get on a creeper and bench presss it down. Unless you have a tranny jack.

Its all a royal pain in the ass.

Those steps are not in order, and the FSM covers it much better than i just did

 

Sorry if this is a crazy question, but why do you need to remove the transmission shifter to remove the transfer case? I ask because I'm getting ready to pull my transfer case out of my 1990 V-6 MT 4Runner and have all the FSM's except the one that mentions pulling the T-case from a MT. I only have the one the shows pulling the whole unit with the AT. Thank you.

 

If I remember correct you don`t have enough room to get the transfer case out.

The only way I ever done is to remove and install them as a complete unit.

No matter how much you hang the back of the transmission down not quite enough clearance to get the transfer case far enough back.

To drop it down.
It has been quite a few years since I tried this maybe some one knows a trick.

 

So are you saying I need to remove the transfer case and transmission as a unit, or that Yes, I do need to remove the transmission shifter to remove the transfer case?

Maybe some one will post that has been able to drop just the Transfer case

Then reinstall with no problems.

I think it is the seal in the back of the transmission that is part of the problem.

You can maybe get it down with brute force by destroying that seal and perhaps other things but never get it back up.
