It's stuck on there pretty good with some sort of red factory sealant. The shop manual says to use some special tool with a blade...don't have it.

Just work a screwdriver or paint scraper around the edge and gradually pull the pan away from the tranny. Toyota uses the red sealant instead of a gasket on our trans pans (and oil pans) so before you reinstall it you will need to clean off both surfaces anyways.

 

Oh boy. I'd to hate use a screwdriver the flange like that, but I will give it a try.

OK to use the Right Stuff to reseal the pan?

 

Ok... got it off with the help of a deadblow, razor and a screwdriver...

Now how do I maneuver it out of the way??!?! I can't seem to figure out how to drop the pan out..

Do I have to drop the front swaybar??

 

i had to drop the swaybar to get the tranny pan off my 90 4Runner if that helps

 

guess I am a little late a 4 to 6 inch putty knife works well for breaking the seal as well

 

Ok....

I think I got it....

You need to drop the truck to the ground so the swaybar is preloaded. With the swaybar tweaked a little bit, you have enough room to lower the pan.

Thankfully these trucks are fairly high off the ground, so I can sneak under there and do what I have to do.

CORRECTION (on my previous post)...you have to remove the swaybar to get the pan BACK UP...unless you want sealant all over your filter/screen (ask me how I know).

So after I had everything ready to go, I get under the truck on the ground to find out that it's not going to go back on like the way it came off. I had to lift the truck again and remove the swaybar....BROKE ONE OF THE BRACKETS in the process. You should have heard the curses flying. Not fun when you're sealant is in the process of drying up.

So I ended up having to drill out the remained of the stud on the broken bracket and put a regular bolt on instead. That should hold now until I get a new bracket and bushings - boy were they shot.
