Try a spray called OZIUM. It comes in a white/gray can and is sold in wal-mart/auto zone. It kills the smell pretty dang good. I have used in in my house and vehicles for several years. I swear by the stuff.

steam clean it. or better yet take it to a detail shop and have them steam clean it. only way to get the odor out of fabic (my ex's cats decided it urinate in my blazer and that was the only way i got it out). also for light smells sprinkle baking soda in the carpets one night and then vaccum it out the next day. i love vinyl.

Cymon, you are thorough! how did you get the carpet out and back in?
I removed my seats, center console and the door floor trim I was at first going to put the carpet in the washing machine but I feared that it would tear off the insulation. so I just power washed it instead. make sure you vacuum it first, my truck came from CA and there was a ton of sand in the carpet. I first tried to power wash it still in the truck and it sprayed wet sand all over everything and made a bigger mess.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

For stage one, I sprayed the S out of it tonight with Febreze Auto and then used some of car shampoo stuff on the seats.

If it still smells tomorrow Ill do stage two: Ozone. And if that dont work Im going with Cymon's route.

I bought a 97 4runner a few months back and I didnt really notice it at first cuz it had been nicely detailed, but the previous owner was clearly a smoker. Then I went on a heinous road trip with a smelly friend and a dog and some vanilla-rama air fresheners and it just smelled really weird. Then I tried using Meguairs anti-scent spray and NOW it just smells like all that crap, plus play-doh.

I was hoping someone knows of a product or method that will actually get rid of the smell in this rig, ie not "buy a different 4runner..."
lol sounds like you had quite the time id try steaming it and leaving the doors open at night (i wont take responsibility for stolen crap) i did that when i got my 84 it had been moth balled

If it's done right, it does. Like I said before, it's like giving the car a "blank slate" for smells. It shouldn't smell like much of anything afterward if they do it right. You can buy an ozone generator of your own for a couple hundred bucks at your local hydroponics shop. Most people around here use them to take the smell of their "vegetables" out of the air......

Ritzy: After vacuuming my 4runner I thoroughly sprayed all carpet, cloth, headliner with febreeze Auto spray, and then cleaned the seats with a product made to get rid of cloth oder (cant remember the name). it has a brush on the can to scrub the foam spray into the fabric. I let it air out for a bit and then sit for two days. Today after driving it with all the windows down it smelled strongly of new febreze (gross) and slightly of the "old spice" as ill call it ;D Id say like 65/35 ratio cleaner/old spice. If it is nice this weekend Im gunna steam clean it and if not, Im going to the Ozone. Ozone just sounds cool and Im a sucker for cool sounding stuff.

Ozone will work, just as long as there is no dead rat behind your dash. If it's in the seats, ozone is just about the only thing that will get the stink out.

Smells again. Slightly less, but still noticeable. It poured rain all day and yesterday I modified my air intake, so no steam cleaning :/ Im going to get it Ozoned soon... but it will be money coming out of my detriot locker install, so we'll see if I back out ;D Ill be sure to post my results when I do get it ozoned.
