Does anybody know how to disable the power radio antenna without unplugging it from under the fender? Is there a fuse I can pull that will only disable the antenna? I already cut the wire from my radio but at start up the antenna still tries to go down. I can hear a relay clicking but I can't find it anywhere, can I just pull that? or Is there a way to get to the powerwire in the engine bay? Thanks

Bump for an answer I'd like to have too. I replaced my power antenna with a Taco whip antenna, and I hear a relay clicking also.

 

i am in the same boat. I was in friends 80 series landcruiser the other day and he has a button that lets him choose whether or not the antennae is up. I know that doesnt fix my power antennae motor but iwould be cool if you could retrofit that button in somehow.

 

You have to unplug it at the antenna in the fender as far as I know. Worked for me anyway.

As for the question about an inline up/down switch: Yes, that can be done too. It is actually quite easy. You just need to know which wire to tap into coming out of the back of the radio wiring harness. Just install a simple switch to prevent the antenna from going up. For me, it was a yellow wire if I remember correctly. But now it doesn't matter since I did the Taco antenna mod (awesome mod by the way!).

 

hm...this bites, If there is really no way to disable it, is there a way to get to the motor and unplug it from under the fender without removing the Sport Edition flares? That seems like it will be a pain in the butt...

 

I want to disable my motor because i decided to only use the diversity antenna printed on my rear cargo window. The reception quality is pretty much the same as using the antenna....

 

It is a pain in the butt. If I am not mistaken, there is a fuse for the antenna. But I would have to verify that. That might be another option to check, but I could be wrong.

 

Mee too Mee too! I wanna know how to disable that friggin motor. I believe there is not a single fuse for the antenna.

 

Well, if you guys can't find a fuse then you are going to need to unplug the harness from the fenderwell. Be sure to order more of those push-in fender thingies that always break. Sorry for the technical term.

I removed the whole freakin appratus from my 2nd gen. 4Runner when the antenna was sticking. I can't recall exactly, but I seem to remeber a wiring harness that I disconnected and it was accessed through the fender well. It wasn't much of an issue to pull the plastic back and get to it.

BTW -- what is the Tacoma antenna mod? Can it be done on a 2nd gen 4Runner? If this has been discussed at length, just point me to a link, please.

Haha...I figured it out.

I did this a while back because I was too lazy to fix it and I got tired of hearing the stupid thing run. First I tried disconnecting the remote wire from the CD player. No worky.

Here's what you do. Turn on the CD player and let the antenna get to the up position if it isn't already stuck there. On a 2nd gen, there is an antenna relay up under the dash slightly to the left of the steering wheel. On my '93 it is a brown box about 1.5" thick and 3" by 4" if I remember correctly. If you can't find it, turn the key on and off and listen for the click of the relay. That should help you locate it. Just disconnect it and now your antenna will no longer run and drive you crazy.

Same method as the 2nd gen. There's a relay below the stereo thats actually marked "Antenna Relay". I think it's white or something. My mast has been broken forever...too lazy to unplug it.

 

gapguy, do you know exactly where under the stereo? i looked everywhere and still can't find it!

 

I swear I saw it under there...Maybe it's on the glove box side? I thought it was directly below the radio, and mounted to the "hump". It's there somewhere...

 

Turn it on and off and listen for a click.

 

Its the brown box located right under driver's side of the radio in the center console of the 3rd Gen. if you pull the wire harness from it the radio won't work since its all interconnected and the radio circuit requires the relay to function. Spend the $60 on the 4Runner/Tacoma stick antenna kit from the dealer and replace the antenna setup; you'll be more successful with less hassle.
